Plot

Mia Hall and her family are getting ready to resume their normal day activities when it is announced on the radio that the school has been canceled. Mia Denny's father is a teacher and as a result of the snow day does not have to go to work. Mia Kat's mother, a travel agent, decides to call and with her family to go out into the street to visit Mia's grandparents who live on a farm. It was also revealed that Mia was dating a popular and rising old rockstar named Adam Wilde.

The story goes back to Mia's early life with a rocker father and an inexperienced mother, when one day they took Mia to a music class where Mia decided she wanted to start playing the cello. After his parents saw that Mia was very interested in cello, they hired a teacher to help her play. Kat proved pregnant with Teddy, who according to Mia is the reason for his father's departure from his band.

Years later, a teenager Mia is still passionate about cello and playing at school in the band room where Adam peeked in play, seeing him for the first time, leading him to ask Kim, Mia's best friend, about him. Adam then asks Mia to date a cello recital, where they show affection for each other.

The story goes back to the present with families driving to a grandparent's ranch when their car collided with an oncoming truck. Mia seems to have an out-of-body experience where she finds herself barefoot and sees her body lying on the road while the paramedics try to help her and her family. Mia tried to ask the paramedics what happened, but realized that no one could see or hear it. Mia, now in hospital, panicked because she did not know the current status of one of her family members when they took her for surgery. A sympathetic nurse, Nurse Ramirez, tells Mia - her physical body, not Mia's spirit, which she apparently can not see - that it's up to her whether she wants to stay or not.

The story returns once more to Mia attending one of Adam's concerts with her band Willamette Stone, where she does not seem to fit. Adam's band continued to gain more recognition and signed for the label, which began to weigh on their relationships due to the itinerary. At dinner, Mia's grandfather advised her to sign up for Juilliard, an idea she initially rejected, but later investigated. He finally landed an audition in San Francisco. It took a while for Mia to tell Adam about her audition and when she did, she became angry and went for a weeklong show.

On this day, Mia has surgery. He saw a doctor talking to his grandparents standing outside the pediatric chamber where Teddy was in a coma. Adam came to the hospital to see Mia, but was not allowed in because she was not a close family member. It was later revealed that Mia Kat's mother was declared dead on arrival and her father Denny died at the operating table. She later learned that Teddy had died of epidural hematoma. Grandpa speaks to Mia, revealing that her father gave up on being in a band because she wanted to give her a better life and become a better father. She, too, was crying, giving Mia permission to move from this life if she wanted, which influenced Mia to decide that she wanted to die so she could join her family on the other side.

The story goes back to Mia in her audition for Juilliard, where she plays the best she has ever played, leading her to think that if accepted, she will leave. After reconciliation with Adam, they talked about the most likely to go to Juilliard, which ultimately caused them to part and separate.

After some time, Mia seems stable enough to receive more visitors. Mia is shown symbolically about to let go when she hears the music performed on the cello recit that she attended with Adam. It was revealed that Adam had come to see Mia and that she was playing her iPod for her. He brings with him a letter Mia received from Juilliard saying that he has been accepted and let him know that he will do whatever he wants if he stays. He started playing the song he finally wrote about himself. Mia, after recalling all the happy moments of her life, squeezed Adam's hand and opened her eyes and saw Adam as she hovered over it and said, "Mia?".
