Blink Sex Blood Sugar is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Rick Rubin, it was the band's first record released on Warner Bros. Records. The musical style of Sex Magik Blood Sugar differed mainly from the techniques used on previous Chili Peppers albums, Mother's Milk , and featured little use of heavy metal guitar riffs. The subject of this album includes sexual innuendos and references to drugs and death as well as themes of lust and joy.

Peaked at number one in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and three in the United States' Billboard 200, the album has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and is an introduction to Red Hot Chili Peppers to popularity world and critical acclaim. Blood Sugar Sex Magik produces a series of hit singles including "Under the Bridge" which are very successful and one of their most popular songs, "Give It Away". The other three releases are "Suck My Kiss", "Breaking the Girl", and "If You Have to Ask". Guitarist John Frusciante quit the mid-tour band in 1992 (did not return until 1998) because of his inability to overcome the popularity of the album. Blood Sugar Sex Magik was recognized as an influential and seminal component of an alternative rock explosion in the early 1990s. Steve Huey from AllMusic stated that Blood Sugar Sex Magik was probably the best album Chili Peppers would ever make.

The band's previous album, 1989's Mother's Milk will be the band's second album to enter in Billboard 200, peaking at number 52 and at the greatest time in their career. Although the record was a bit unsuccessful, production was saddled by producer Michael Beinhorn. He convinced Frusciante to play with a heavier tone overall, and instructed Kiedis to write lyrics that would be more radio-worthy, thus causing the band to feel creatively restricted.

When the Chili Peppers contract with EMI expires, they start looking for a new record company to release their next album. The group reached a consensus to go with Sony BMG/Epic, provided that they bought their last album from EMI. Although the label promised to take only a few days, the process stretches into several months. Although an agreement was made with Sony/Epic, Mo Ostin of Warner Bros. Records noted Kiedis to congratulate him on a successful deal, and praised the rival record label. Kiedis recalled the situation: "The coolest, most obvious person we have ever met during all these negotiations has just been personally called in to encourage me to set a great record for a rival company. That is the type of man I want to work for." The group pursued the idea, and eventually dropped a contract with Sony in favor of a deal with Warner Bros.. Ostin called an old friend at EMI, who was soon allowed to transfer the label.

Recording and production

Now settle on Warner Bros. Records, Chili Peppers began searching for suitable producers. One person in particular, Rick Rubin, stands out, because he's more knowledgeable than the people he's worked with in the past even though Rubin had previously rejected the band's offer to produce their 1987 album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan because of Kiedis's drug problem and guitarist Hillel Slovak who would die of a heroin overdose a year later. Finally, the band decided Rubin would be the best choice as a producer, and therefore hired him to produce what would become the Blood Sex Blood Sugar . Unlike previous manufacturers of Peppers, Rubin is someone they feel confident to ask for guidance and input during difficult times. She often helps organize drum beats, guitar melodies and lyrics.

The band sought to record the album in an unconventional setting, believing that it would increase their creative output. Rubin suggests the house magician Harry Houdini once lived in, which they agreed on. A crew was hired to set up a recording studio and other equipment needed for home production. The band decided that they would stay indoors during the recording, although according to Kiedis, Smith believed the location was haunted, and refused to stay. He will, every day, come by motorcycle. Smith himself denied this account, and instead claimed the real reason he did not stay at The Mansion because he wanted to be with his wife. Frusciante, however, disagrees with Smith, and says "There must be ghosts in the house," and Frusciante feels they are "very friendly." We [band] have nothing but a warm thrill and happiness everywhere we go in this house. "

Frusciante, Kiedis, and Flea each have separate rooms at each end of the house. When not recording with the band, Frusciante will spend his time painting, listening to music, reading and recording the songs he wrote. Due to the exile, Kiedis eventually recorded all his vocals in his room, because it was large enough to hold recording equipment. For more than thirty days, the Chili Peppers worked inside the house; Kiedis feels it is an accommodating and resourceful environment that allows him to complete the rest of the lyrics. During production, the band agreed to let Flea's brother-in-law document the creative process on film. When the album recording finished, Chili Peppers released the movie, titled Funky Monks .

Music

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was written at a faster pace than the band's previous album. Before the Chili Peppers moved to the mansion, Frusciante and Kiedis collaborated in their own homes, to organize the structure of guitar songs and riffs. The band then presented ideas to Flea and Smith, and overall, they decided what they would use for ensemble bass, guitar, vocals and percussion.

Kiedis focuses the lyrics on sexual references and satire, as they often think. Songs such as "Suck My Kiss", "If You Must Ask", "Sir Psycho Sexy", "Give It Away" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" all contain various sexual relationships, with lyrics like "A state of sexual light/Kiss her virginity/my affinity "and" Great euphoria/Should I/Erotic shock/What is the lust function. "The concept behind" The Greeting Song "is Rubin's request. Rubin asked Kiedis to write songs just about girls and cars. Although Kiedis did not like the concept, he wrote the song as Rubin requested and ultimately disliked almost all aspects of the lyrics. Kiedis also began writing songs about suffering, and self-mutilating thoughts that he experienced thanks to his addiction to heroin and cocaine; he believes that his life has reached the lowest point under the bridge in downtown Los Angeles. More than a month later, Rubin found a poem that eventually became the lyrics of "Under the Bridge". Also, he suggested that Kiedis would show it to the other band members. However, Kiedis was worried because he thought the lyrics were "too soft" and different from the band style. After singing the verse to Frusciante, the band began working on the structure of the song the following day. Rubin and Kiedis worked a few hours to set up chords and melodies until they both received them as complete. Frusciante finally chose the chords he played on the intro so as to balance the distressed atmosphere of the song: "My brain interpreted it as a very sad song so I think if the lyrics were really sad like that I should write some happier chords." "Naked in the Rain "was one of the first songs the band wrote for the album. The Chilli Peppers even played at the end of Mother's Milk Tour in 1990, while the intro to "The Greeting Song" and "Sir Psycho Sexy" were also ridiculed during the end of the tour; However, no songs are finished or have lyrics.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik integrates the typical punk and funk style of the band, but away from it all with more melodic songs. Songs like "The Righteous and the Wicked," "Suck My Kiss," "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", "Give it Away", and "Funky Monks" still use heavy metal guitar riffs, but they are different from Mother's Milk because they contain little distortion. Flea, who focuses his bass playing around slapping techniques, underestimates this more traditional and melodic bass line. He even adopted a minimalist philosophy, "more or less," saying, "I try to play only on Blood Sugar Blood Sugar because I've played too much before then, so I thought, 'I really should relax and play half of a lot of notes. When you play less, it's more interesting - there's more room for everything. If I play something busy, it stands out, instead of constant bass dragging records. The room is nice. "Kiedis thinks that the album has expanded the Chili Peppers' musical horizon and is presented as a departure from previous material. One of Blood Sugar Sex Magik's more melodic songs, "Breaking the Girl", is written about the ever-changing Kiedis relationship. She was afraid that she was following in his father's footsteps and just being a basket's eye, rather than building a stable and long-term relationship: "As something fun and for a while because of the entry of these attractive and beautiful girls, in the end, and you have nothing. "The track also features a bridge in the middle, which consists of percussion instruments taken from landfills.

Although jam always serves as an integral aspect of songwriting for Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik sees songs that contain more structure. One of the special jams caused the breakout song on the album: Frusciante, Flea, and Smith all played together - with Kiedis in another part of the watch room - when "Flea started playing this crazy bass line, and Chad cracked and played along... I always have pieces of the song idea or even a certain isolated phrase in my mind I (Kiedis) take the mic and bonded out 'Give it, give it up, leave it now.' The philosophy behind the lyrics comes from the conversation that Kiedis had with Nina Hagen, about unselfishness and how unimportant material material was in her life, thus giving her the song "Give It Away." She is also remembered about the end of the guitarist Chili Peppers Hillel Slovak, who composed "My Lovely Man" in his memory Kiedis writes "Sir Psycho Sexy" as an over-zealous version of self, a figure who can get any woman, and do whatever he loves. "The Power of Equality "confronts the topic of racial equality, prejudice, and sexism." Kiedis writes, "I Can Lie" to document his short relationship with Irish singer, Sinà ©  ad O'Connor.

Promotions and release

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was released on September 24, 1991, the same day with Nirvana's breakthrough album Nevermind . It was certified gold more than two months later on November 26, 1991, and was certified platinum on April 1, 1992; since then it has been seven times platinum in the United States. The album peaked at number 3 on Billboard 200. Initially, "Give it Away" did not go well in the mainstream; some Warner Bros. 'the target radio station refused to broadcast it, telling the band to "come back to us when you have a melody on your song". KROQ (from Los Angeles), however, started playing the single several times daily, and that, according to Kiedis, "is the beginning of the 'Give It Away' infusion into mass consciousness." The single eventually reached number 9 in the UK Top 40 and number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100. Blood Sugar Sex Magik has sold over 13 million copies worldwide.

Due to the success of "Give it Away", the band did not foresee "Under the Bridge" as equally worthy. Warner Bros. sent a representative to a Chili Peppers concert to find out what would eventually be the next single. When Frusciante started playing "Under the Bridge", Kiedis missed his gesture; the whole audience began to sing the song, instead. Kiedis was initially "embarrassed that I had fucked up in front of the Warner people... I apologize for making love but they say 'Dammit? Are you kidding? When every kid on the show sings a song, that's our next single.'" "Below The bridge ", therefore, is selected as the second Blood Sugar Sex Magik 's. In January 1992, "Under the Bridge" had exploded, peaking at number 2 on Billboard Hot 100.

To promote the album in Europe, Kiedis and Frusciante agreed that they would travel. However, it was difficult for Frusciante to adapt to life outside the home, after being near-exile for almost 30 days. Kiedis recalled the situation: "He has an outpouring of creativity when we make albums that I think he really does not know how to live life with that creativity." It was also during this period when Frusciante began experimenting with heroin, which further compromised his mental stability. The European promotion trip took its toll on Frusciante, and she decided to go home when she and Kiedis reached London.

Critical reception

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was well received by critics, who praised the Chili Peppers for not being too strong on listeners with heavy metal guitar riffs like those of their previous albums. Rolling Stone Tom Moon praises Rick Rubin for a stylish change; Rubin "[giving] the dynamics of chili". He went on to praise the overall voice, which "shows a growing curiosity about the texture and feel of the studio". Steve Huey from AllMusic said the album was "The Red Hot Chili Peppers' best album... John Frusciante's guitar is less noisy, leaving space for different textures and clearer lines, while the band as a whole is more focused and less indulgent." He considers Blood Sugar to be "varied... it extends the group's music and emotional reach." The Guitar Player magazine praised Frusciante with the drastic changes of Chili Peppers in style: "by blending acid-rock, soul-funk, early-rock art, and blues style with Strat, raw and unprocessed Marshall's tone , [Frusciante] about unpublicized explosive formulas.Pammer Powters of PopMatters says that "in one funked-out, chaotic, cruel, Sex Blood Slimming movement reorganized my relationship with music, for me myself, for my culture and my identity, for my race and class. "In an article published in The Tampa Tribune, editor Philip Booth praised the notes as" an ambitious effort that culminates and blooms the musical powers that has grown in the band's voice since Kiedis and Flea gave birth to the band in 1983. "Robert Christgau gave it an honorable title in his Village Voice consumer guide, named" Give It Away "and" Breaking the Girl "in the spotlight as he studied s "they have grown up, they have learned to write, they have the right to be sex mystic. "Chicago Sun-Times critic Michael Corcoran is more devoted to his praise, deeming" great "notes on the occasion while looking for an excessive album length. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is considered a influential, throughout the nineties, by establishing itself as a fundamental foundation for alternative rocks, also referred to as "rock funk albums" by FasterLouder.

"Under the Bridge", which became a runaway song for the band, was considered the highlight of the album by some critics. Allmusic reviewed the song individually and referred to it as "a touching sentiment... it is a clear proof among the simple guitars that gave rise to the introductory poem, and the sense of fragility that is only doubled by the still-falling crescendo tempo," and finally "has become an integral part of the alternation landscape of the 1990s, and remains one of the purest diamonds that sparkle among the rough and rich rigidity of funk chasm that dominates the oeuvre of Peppers itself. " However, Entertainment Weekly criticized the seriousness that Red Hot Chili Peppers showed as "disagreeing with the usual Hot Hot band irregularities", and "Under the Bridge" had a "shmancy-fancy touch". The song ended up peaking at number 2 on Billboard Hot 100 in April 1992. "Give It Away" was also praised, though as "... an associative mix free of positive vibrations, tribute to music heroes, and free love, "with Frusciante" adding two of the most unexpected changes of the song: abrupt contrast with Kiedis's hypertension in the form of a previously unclear solo that was recorded earlier and nicknamed back on the rhythmic track, and a hard-riff -rocking that was not introduced until the outro of the song ". Tracks like "Sir Psycho Sexy", however, are criticized for being too explicit. Devon Powters of Pop Matters said that "Eight minutes from 'Sir Psycho Sexy' will transform the young RHCP listeners into a jello hormonal vibration. The unclear lines slip into Apache Rose Peacock 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' sounds like fucking.Even the prettiest virgins come away from the Blood Sugar Sex Magik with the level of sexual maturity, even the slickest playa can learn some new moves. "Instead," Suck My Kiss ", according to Amy Hanson of Allmusic , "actually flying in the face of an established alternative rock pecking order." With the song, the Chili Peppers "are fully allied to very band-band bands capable of making a radical impact on the dominated sonic landscape, apparently, from every angle of minutes by grunge."

Accolades

Tour and departure of John Frusciante

Before the Sex Magik Blood Sugar Bloodstart begins, Kiedis sees the music video for "The Rhinoceros" The Smashing Pumpkins on MTV. He then telephoned the band manager and asked him to accommodate The Smashing Pumpkins for the tour. A few days after Pumpkins confirmed that they would accompany Chili Peppers, former Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons called and asked the band to allow his new group of friends, Pearl Jam, to open it for them on the upcoming tour. The first show after the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik was at Oscar Mayer Theater in Madison, Wisconsin, which was greeted with a positive reaction from the Milwaukee Journal: "the audience is a mass spinning cup of air, ice rocks, shoes, shirts, pogo dancers, body-passers and stage divers. And it's not a pure club boy in moshpit - lots of women are bought into chaos, stripping into their bra and throwing themselves about crazy as the band tore via 'Higher Ground', 'Suck My Kiss', and 'Give it Away', which was Goth-ed by Frusciante when he added a riff from Black Sabbath's 'Sweet Leaf'.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik started receiving heavy radio games and massive sales in the middle of their US tour. Frusciante, who prefers Chili Peppers to remain in the underground music world, enters a state of rejection and depression. According to Kiedis, "He began to lose all aspects of mania, happy-go-lucky, and fun of his personality.Even on stage, there's a lot more serious energy around him." Frusciante slowly drifted away from the band altogether, and began to form a grudge against his bandmates. He saw the band's new popularity embarrassing.

The tension on the stage began to grow between Kiedis and Frusciante. Kiedis recalled an argument after the show in New Orleans: "We have a sold-out house and John just stands in the corner, barely playing his guitar. We came out onstage and John and I went inside." With Peppers now playing in the arena rather than the theater, the tour promoters decided that Pearl Jam should be replaced by more successful acts. Kiedis contacted Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and asked if Nirvana would replace Pearl Jam on a tour - an offer he received Grohl. The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, however, refused to play with Nirvana because he had dated frontal wife Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love. The Pumpkins, therefore, were excluded from the concert bill and replaced with Pearl Jam. Their first show with Nirvana was at the L.A Sports Arena. Kiedis regarded their actions as "raw energy, their musicality, their song choice, they were like chopping saws throughout the night." When the Red Hot Chili Peppers finished their tour with Nirvana, they went to Europe, where Frusciante, who needed someone to contact, brought his girlfriend, Toni Oswald. Kiedis said that "John has broken the unwritten rule of no spouse or boyfriend on the street." Briefly interrupting the European tour, the Chili Peppers flew to New York City and performed on Saturday Night Live episodes. The band plays "Under the Bridge" as the second number; performance perceived by Kiedis sabotaged by Frusciante:

[Frusciante] is experimenting with the way he would do if we practiced the song. We do not. We are on a live broadcast in front of millions of people and it is a torture. I started singing with what I thought was the key he was playing. I feel like I was stabbed from behind and hang out to dry in front of all Americans while this guy went in a corner in the shadows, playing some out-of-tune dissonant experiments.

The band took a two-week break between Europe and Japan from the tour, which began in May 1992. A few minutes before the Chili Peppers were scheduled to perform in Tokyo, Frusciante refused to take the stage, claiming he was out of the band. After half an hour of coaxing, Frusciante agreed to play the show, though he insisted it would be his last. Kiedis recalled the situation: "This is the most horrible show ever seen, every single note, every word, hurt, knowing we're no longer a band, I keep looking at John and seeing a humiliating sculpture... And that night, John disappeared from the obscene world of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. "The band hired guitarist Arik Marshall to complete the rest of the tour, including Lollapolooza and several European festivals. Marshall, however, was fired at the end of the tour.

Legacy

Years later, Blood Sugar Sex Magik was placed on top of the list of "Best Of", especially related to the 90's. The Spin magazine charted the album at number 58 on their "90's Top 90 Albums", and number 11 on the same list compiled by Pause & amp; Play . The record was placed in slapnpop Magazine "101 Essential Guitar Albums"; and is included in the 1001 Album You Should List Before You Die . Blood Sugar Sex Magik also ranked number 310 on Rolling Stone "500 Greatest of All Time" and number 14 on "100 Nine Year Best Nine Albums".
