Device Manager is Control Panel applet in Microsoft Windows operating system. This allows the user to view and control the hardware that is attached to the computer. When a hardware does not work, the offending hardware is highlighted to be handled by the user. The hardware list can be sorted by various criteria.
For each device, users can:
- Supply device driver corresponds to Windows Driver Model
- Turn the device on or off
- Tell Windows to ignore non-working devices

Device Manager was introduced with Windows 95 and later added to Windows 2000. In the NT-based version, it is included as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in.

Device disabled
The disabled device has been manually disabled by the user or in some way error. In Windows 95 to XP, this is denoted by red X. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this is replaced by a gray-pointed down arrow in the lower-right corner of the device icon.
Hardware is not working properly
There are many reasons why the hardware is not working properly. If Windows recognizes a problem with the device, it is marked with a black exclamation mark (!) On the yellow triangle in the bottom right corner of the device icon.
Unrecognized hardware
Hardware may not be recognized if it is not installed properly or is not compatible with your system. This is denoted by a yellow question mark in place of the device icon.
Device selected manually
The blue "i" on the white field in the lower right corner of the Device icon indicates that the Use automatic settings feature is not selected for the device and the resource is manually selected. Note that this does not indicate a problem or state of being disabled.

Error code
The Device Manager error code is a numerical code, each accompanied by an error message, which helps the user determine what kind of issues Windows faces with hardware.
The driverquery command
The driverquery command-line program generates a list of installed devices and drivers, similar to the Device Manager output, which the user can view on the screen or redirect to a file. This is useful for noting and to report problems to remote third parties such as technical support personnel. The program has a switch to control the details and output format, including the /fo switch with the csv parameter to generate output in comma-separated values ​​format, suitable for import into application spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel.
