Green Eggs and Ham is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, was first published on August 12, 1960. Since 2016, the book has sold 8 million copies worldwide. The story has appeared in several adaptations beginning in 1973. Seuss on the Loose starring Paul Winchell as the voice of Sam-I-am and the first-person narrator.

The character named "Sam-I-am" interrupts an unnamed character to try a dish of eggs and green ham. The unnamed figure refused, replying, "I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them, Sam-I-am." He kept repeating this as Sam constantly followed him, asking him to try it in eight locations (house, box, car, tree, train, dark, rain, boat) and with three animals (rats, foxes, and goats). Finally, he gives Sam a nuisance and tries the green eggs and ham, which he likes after all and gladly replied, "I do it like green egg and ham Thank you, thank you, Sam-me-me."

Green Eggs and Ham is one of Seuss's "Beginner Books", written in a very simple vocabulary for novice readers. Green Eggs and Ham was published on August 12, 1960. In 2001, this book became the fourth-best-selling fourth-best-English hardcover book of all time. By 2014, the book has sold 8 million copies. In 1999, the National Education Association (NEA) conducted an online survey of children and teachers, searching for 100 of the most popular children's books. The children ranked third
This book has been quite deeply embedded in cultural awareness that US District Judge James Muirhead referred to Green Eggs and Ham in a court decision September 21, 2007 after receiving an egg in a letter from inmate Charles Jay Wolff protesting the prison diet. Muirhead ordered the eggs crushed and given his judgment in the style of Seuss. Senator Ted Cruz read a book on the floor of the United States Senate during his influence on Obamacare funding. Musicians will.i.am have stated that his moniker was inspired by the story.
On September 29, 1991, following the death of Dr Seuss' earlier that week, Reverend Jesse Jackson read the Green and Ham eggs quote on Saturday Night Live during a special segment homage.
Adaptations
- Green and Ham Egg is the third of three Geisel stories adapted to special television . Seuss on the Loose, featuring a narrative link by The Cat In The Hat, in 1973. ( The Sneetches and The Zax are the other two.)
- The song "Green Eggs and Ham" was recorded by the band Moxy FrÃÆ'üvous on their independent debut album in 1992 Moxy FrÃÆ'üvous and is a rap treatment of the famous story.
- This book is also made into the adaptation of Living Books for PC and there are similar differences to reflect new media like Sam-I-Am singing the opening line.
- The upcoming animated television series based on this book, Green Eggs and Ham , will premiere on Netflix in 2018, produced by Warner Bros.. Animation, Excellent Production, Stern Talk, Random House Children's Entertainment and Gulfstream Television and distributed by Warner Bros. Television.
- This book is also featured as one of the segments that is turned on via live action in stage mode on the 1994 TV movie In Search Dr. Seuss .
Temporary ban
In 1965, the source in question stated that the book was banned in the People's Republic of China because of "early Marxist depictions". The ban was lifted in 1991, following the death of Seuss.
