Highlander (1986)

The first of the film series, Highlander , directed by Russell Mulcahy, was released on March 7, 1986, with the tagline "There Can Be Only One." The film features a number of flashback scenes that build Connor MacLeod from the early history of Clan MacLeod, and build up to his final destiny among the last of the mysterious Immortals. Through a mentor and fellow Immortal - Juan SÃÆ'¡nchez Villa-Lobos RamÃÆ'rez - he learned about the existence of other Immortals, which spontaneously emerged throughout history. An Immortal can die only after being beheaded, and Immortals fight each other in a single battle ritual to death, until "Gathering," when some remaining Deity will fight until only one left to take "The Prize." The Gathering took place in modern times (1985) New York City, when the Highlander, who had fallen in love again despite trying to distance himself from humanity, defeated The Kurgan, whom he had met repeatedly over the centuries before, and who had killed RamÃÆ'rez and many others. The film was titled Shadow Clan in the earliest draft. Once released, the film is not financially successful and is poorly reviewed by critics. However, he gained a strong cult followers, was an international hit, and was considered by many to be the best film in the series.

Original orchestra scores were composed by Michael Kamen, but his soundtrack included some songs by Queen, such as "Princes of the Universe," which was also used in the title line of the Highlander television series.

Box office-wise, in the United States, the film only took in $ 2,453,021 on its opening weekend and ended up grossing $ 5,735,847. However, the film is more internationally successful, with $ 12,885,193. Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) >

Highlander II: The Quickening, also directed by Russell Mulcahy, was released on November 1, 1991. The film mainly took place in 2024, with flashbacks to events in 1999, and also a very distant past on the planet Zeist. MacLeod designs an energy shield to protect the Earth after its ozone layer begins to crumble, but the red clouds The heavy shield and natural sunlight barrier have sent humanity into despair. The shield also falls under the control of the Shield Company, which imposes a substantial tax on its services in the pursuit of profit. Meanwhile, MacLeod has been physically aged into a weak old man - his mortality part wins the Prize - and expects that he will eventually die of natural causes. After he killed one of the Immortals of the Zeist who was sent to kill him, he became young and Immortal again, much to his dismay. He later joined Louise Marcus (Virginia Madsen), who led a group of terrorists who tried to dismantle Shield.

The film offers an alternative origin to God, who is described as an alien exiled to Earth from Zeist. In direct contradiction to the original film, RamÃÆ'rez and MacLeod were friends before they were exiled from Zeist. In the original, they first met in Scotland in 1541, without mentioning the Zeist. The film is made almost entirely in Argentina; after the country's economy fell, film investors took direct control of the film, eliminating Mulcahy and his creative influence almost entirely from the film. When it was released in 1991, it was poorly reviewed by critics around the world, and is now considered one of the worst films ever made.

Russell Mulcahy was disappointed with the film that was originally released, and then made a cut of his "Renegade Version" director in the exact sequence of scenes, and the filmmakers' explanation of why the film changed as the original. One of the most dynamic changes from Mulcahy is the re-labeling of Zeis's recordings as a flashback to an advanced technological ancient civilization on Earth, more in line with the continuation of the first film and the next TV series. In 2004, a Special Edition was released, displaying several different changes, including new computer-generated visual effects throughout the movie. Reconstruction of reconstructed movies is much better than the original; although reception is generally rather mixed up.

Highlander III: The Sorcerer (1994)

Highlander III: The Sorcerer (an alternative titled Highlander: The Final Dimension ) was first released on November 25, 1994. MacLeod battles a soldier absent the original Gathering, as he is buried deep in the cave of Japan which is a sacred ground, isolating him from the supposedly final contest of the first film. Kane (played by Mario Van Peebles) is the master of the "power of illusion," which allows him to create a false image to deceive his enemies. Connor, who has lived with his adopted son John for years with the belief that he is the ultimate Immortal, had to return to New York and complete the work that was restarted in 1985. Along the way, he found a new love, Dr. Alex Johnson (Deborah Unger ). The movie is a box office bomb. Critics and fans claim that it's just a little more than a carbon copy of the first film.

Highlander: _Endgame_ (2000) "> Highlander: Endgame (2000) /h3>

Highlander: Endgame , first released on September 1, 2000, is an attempt to combine characters from the original movie and from the Highlander TV series. The story follows Duncan MacLeod as he faces Jacob Kell, an evil Immortal who has assembled a group of fellow soldiers, as well as an impressive body count. Kell, who holds a centuries grudge against Connor MacLeod's parents, has killed loved ones Connor, and he does not follow a single combat tradition. Connor has spent a decade trying to escape from Game in a hidden Watcher fort known as Sanctuary, but he and Duncan are forced to face this new threat that no one of them alone can successfully fight. Since two MacLeods would not violate a single combat tradition, Connor convinced Duncan to chop him, thus gaining the strength he needed to defeat Kell.

The critical reaction to Highlander: Endgame is negative. It holds a 12% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 52 reviews, higher than Highlander II and Highlander III, both ranked 5% or lower, and the score 21 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 16 reviews.

The film is also a box office bomb, managing to collect only $ 15 million from a $ 25 million budget. The movie opened at No. 3, grossing $ 5.067,331 on the opening weekend. It continues to gross $ 12,811,858 domestically and collects $ 3,031,750 from overseas markets for a worldwide total of $ 15,843,608. However, it was a commercial hit when it was released on DVD. This prompted the producers to release a cut-down version of the film's director, whose reception is much better than the plays in the new and edited recordings added, along with better special effects and audio tracks.

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance (2007)

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is an anime tie-in with the Highlander franchise. Released on 5 June 2007, the film features a new MacLeod character, Colin, who became immortal after his death in Roman Britain, and follows his efforts to take revenge for centuries against Marcus, a perennial Roman general, who repeatedly tries to conquer the world for instilling a supposedly utopian society. Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the film is written by David Abramowitz, who also writes for Highlander: The Series Highlander: The Raven and Sci-Fi Channel Highlander: The Source .
