Review
There are only two instruments in If the Tree Can Fly : bass and cello electric. This is all: Mr. Johnson on bass, Mr. Longsworth in the electric cello. The beauty of music on this album is the interaction between these two unadorned sounds. Basses usually paint a rolling background, when not off on the rhythmic tangent, and Mr. Johnson is always on top of his skills. So, Mr. Longsworth. Cello sometimes staccato, sometimes swollen, always right. The music, of course, is more than the muted sound of two people and their instruments. The instrumental note finds the third sound in the mix and interaction of both bass and cello... The album is appropriately called - if the tree can fly, it barely matches the musical achievements of these two musicians.
