Careers

In Different Light and Linda Davis

Davis's first solo album entry came in 1988 on Epic Records, though it was not until 1991 that he released his first album In Different Light on Liberty Records. The album produced two single graphs, but no Top 40 hit. That same year, Davis co-wrote the title song of Dawn Sears' debut album What Were Want Women to List . A year later, Davis released his second album, Linda Davis , which did not produce a single chart at all. Reba McEntire then chose Davis as the supporting vocalist for his street band.

"Did He Like You" and Shoot for the Moon

Davis had his greatest chart success in 1993 when he and McEntire recorded their duet "Does He Love You". The only hit number one Davis, it also won him and the McEntire Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Collaboration that year. Soon after, Davis signed a contract with Arista Nashville and recorded his third album, Shoot for the Moon . The album's first single, Mac McAnally's composition "Company Time", failed to get into the Top 40. This was followed by "Love Did not Do It" in No. 58. Davis, along with Trisha Yearwood and Martina McBride, sang guest vocals in the closing version of mid-1995 McEntire of Patti LaBelle/Michael McDonald's "On My Own", though only McEntire received a chart credit for it.

Some Things Meant to Be

Davis was not in the Top 40 on the country charts again until 1996 with the title song of 1996's "Some Things Are Meant to Be", his second album for Arista. The song peaked at No. 13 on the country charts, becoming the highest solo chart position. After that is "The Love Story of Making" (co-authored by former NRBQ member Al Anderson) in No. 33, and "Walk Away", which failed to be mapped. Also included in the album is the song "What Do I Know", released by Ricochet in the same year as his first single.

I'm Yours

Davis's fifth album, Yours , was released in 1998 at DreamWorks Records, then a newly established record label. His first single, "I Want Remember This", was used on the soundtrack for the movie Black Dog. The song peaked at No. 20 in 1998, followed by the title track at No. 38 and "From the Inside Out" at No. 60. After this last song, Davis leaves DreamWorks. He signed with Kenny Rogers' Dreamcatcher Records in 2000.

In 2003, Davis released a Christmas album with her husband, Lang Scott, and their daughter, Hillary (April 1, 1986). Two self-released albums, I Have Arrived and Young at Heart, followed in 2004 and 2007 respectively. Hillary founded the country music group Lady Antebellum in 2006.

In 2009, Davis was elected into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
