History

Adrian Chmielarz had previously established Metropolis Software with his friends since high school Grzegorz Miechowski in 1992, and successfully published a number of titles in Europe, including Teenagent . Due to the harsh personnel conflicts with Miechowski, Chmielarz chose to leave Metropolis in 2002. Metropolis was eventually acquired by CD Projekt in 2008 and closed in 2009, although Miechowski later founded 11 bit studios with other Metropolis staff members.

Chmielarz has been considering leaving the video game industry after leaving Metropolis because of tension in his friendship with Miechowski, but after several months decided to try a new venture. He contacted previous acquaintances Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki to build a new studio with the aim of bringing the development of Polish games to a wider audience. Chmielarz said that at the time, most of the games being developed in Poland had some success locally, but were not given much attention from around the world, sentiments shared by many other Polish developers he spoke to. This leads to the name of the studio "People Can Fly", to help raise awareness of Poland's contribution to video games. Chmielarz served as a creative leader, while Poznanski was the main artist and Kosieradzki as the main artist. Securing about twenty developers, some of whom left their established jobs in other studios to join People Can Fly, they developed their first title of Painkiller in 2004, a very successful game that built the studio's reputation.

From Painkiller , People Can Fly gets support from THQ to generate Midnight Come , and receive millions of dollars to expand the studio to 70 people. They have been working in the game for about a year and a half, developing a special game machine for it, before THQ canceled the project, which personally weighed on Chmielarz US $ 300,000 . With only about a month of remaining operating capital, Chmielarz contacts Epic Games and asks for a copy of their Unreal Engine evaluation, so they can make a quick demo that they can shop to other publishers and try to get refinance. Epic vice president Mark Rein, after knowing the Flyway's job, personally handled the agreement. Within a month, People Can Fly has made an impressive demo of Rein with its speed and quality, and arranged for the studio to work in the Gears of War port to a personal computer, financially saving the studio.

Epic's interest in People Can Fly caused the two companies to collaborate on Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment , reaching about 120 staff members today. Person Can Fly was also taken to help Fortnite .

During the development of Gears of War: Judgment Epic began discussing the acquisition of People Can Fly, and completed the acquisition in August 2012. On the same day Epic's announcement, Chmielarz, along with Poznanski and Kosieradzki, announced their departure from studio, soon founded a new studio, The Astronauts. Chmielarz stated the reason for their departure was due to the nature of how Epic approached the game, partly influenced by Tencent's recent investments into the company to help them develop the game as a service. Chmielarz feels this approach will limit them to developing narrative driven games. He said about Epic's new approach: "This is not about right or wrong, hopefully, my vision of the future and their visions of the future are both valid, because that's really possible, they're not against each other." Chmielarz was able to bring a number of other People Can Fly developers to his smaller studio. Astronauts continue to develop their ideas for Come Midnight to The Vanishing of Ethan Carter . Both Chmielarz and Rein describe their departure as friendly.

About a year after the acquisition, People Can Fly changed its name to Epic Games Poland, aligning with the naming of other studios worldwide Epic Games.

On June 24, 2015, People Can Fly announced that they will be split from their parent company Epic Games, a process that begins with the release of Gears of War: Judgment . As a result, the studio became independent and led by Sebastian Wojciechowski. The company maintains the Bulletstorm franchise and discloses unreleased projects based on Unreal Engine 4. People Can Fly continue to work with Epic Games on their projects Fortnite and Spyjinx while I also develop their own IP.

People Can Fly opened a development studio in Newcastle, England, in September 2017, which included a number of Ubisoft developers among others. They opened their second Polish studio in RzeszÃÆ'³w in May 2018, bringing in many former CI Games developers after layoffs in the studio beforehand, bringing the number of people to People Can Fly to around 150, from about 40 by 2015. This is accompanied by news that People Can Fly Work with Square Enix on AAA shooters.
