"Never Can Say Goodbye"
The song written by Clifton Davis was originally performed by The Jackson 5 but this version is more of a remake of the disco version of Gloria Gaynor. Jimmy Somerville's "straight forward" vocals are the strength of the song, with Andy Kellman from AllMusic crediting him by producing a "separate" recording of other versions. The single proved to be a hit on both sides of the Atlantic; reaching number 4 in the UK and 51 in the US while earning silver certification in the UK. The song was used in the episode of Doctor Who "Father's Day".
"For Friends"
The last piece on the original vinyl side is an emotional ballad. It was written to commemorate Mark Ashton, a friend of Somerville and Richard Coles who died of HIV/AIDS. Mark Hooper of The Rough Guide to Rock wrote that this cut might be Somerville's "most astonishing moment". It was one of the first pop songs to discuss AIDS. "For a Friend" reached number 28 on the UK charts. It's featured in the 2014 movie soundtrack Pride .

Artwork and title
White album cover with five gray-ended stars containing two faces in profile (group logo). Right above the star is the name of the band in all uppercase. Above the band name in the red running script is the title of the album 'Red'. The title is a nod to the duo's socialist tendencies. The US issue displays a red cover.
Reception
Opinions vary where this album stands next to its predecessor, Communards . Andy Kellman from the retrospective review AllMusic felt it "peaked their honorable debut in almost every aspect" and that the singles "Tomorrow" and "There More To Love Than Boy Meets Girl" were "stronger than anything on debut". On the other hand, Kate Walter from Spin says it's "weaker than their debut album". Balancing this opinion is Mark Hooper of The Rough Guide to Rock who writes that the album is "every bit as accomplished as its predecessor".
Kellman's study praised Stephen Hague's production work and called the album "a European dance record in the second half of the 80s". Walter credits Cole's "rickety-synthesizer ticky-tickety" and "tingly keyboard" along with Somerville's "squeals" and "ups" as the power of the album but the bemoans compactness of the two album sides.
