Candle yahrzeit , also spell wax yahrtzeit or called warning candle , (Hebrew: ? ? ???? ? ner neshama , which means "soul candle"; Yiddish: ??????? ? ???? ? yortsayt likht , which means "birthday candles") is a kind of lit candles in memory of the dead in Judaism.

This type of candle, which burns up to 26 hours, is also lit on the eve of Yom Kippur or the Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) ceremony to burn the whole opportunity. (Judaism considers the "day" to begin at sunset, according to Genesis, for example, 1: 5: "Be evening and be morning, one day.")

History

The use of yahrzeit candles is a widely practiced practice, in which mourners light a 24-hour burning yahrzeite candle, on the anniversary of death on the Hebrew calendar. The word "yahrzeit " (Yiddish: ???????? ? yortsayt ) means "anniversary" (or rather "anniversary") in Yiddish, derived from German Jahr , year, and Zeit , time. It is customary to light a candle in someone's house, or near the tomb of the deceased. Candles are also lit in Yom Kippur and there is also a habit to light yahrzeit candles on the date when yizkor is said (Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Pesach's last day, and Shavuot). It is also common to light candles during shiva, usually larger ones that last for seven days. The habit of lightning the yahrzeit candle comes from Proverbs 20:27 "The soul of man is the candlestick of the Lord."

The habit of lighting the yahrzeit candle for the deceased is widespread and deeply embedded in the life of the Jews. Many Jews do not follow this custom. Today, some people use electric yahrzeit candles plugged into the wall rather than a real candle for security reasons.

Usage

The yahrzeit candle was lit during the week of Shiva (mourning). It was also turned on at sunset on the eve of yahrzeit and at sunset before the start of Yom Kippur and at sunset before the last day of Succot, Passover and Shavuot. This holiday all have yizkor (memorial) in the synagogue too.

Many Jewish Jewish candle candles were made for Yahrzeit celebrations at the start of a two-day or three-day holiday to enable candlelight in the following days, since on holidays other than Shabbat and Yom Kippur lighting were banned, while the transfer of fire was permitted. 48 hours and 72 hours of candles have also been produced for this purpose.

In culture

After Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was murdered in 1995, the young people who came to mourn Rabin at the Kings of Israel Square where he was killed was dubbed the "Candlelight" (???????) ?, noar hanerot ) after many of the yahrzeit candles they light up.
  • The Yahrzeit candle is often lit by many Jewish communities on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) to commemorate those killed in the Holocaust.
