Dusty Springfield Version

Dusty Springfield, who participated in the 1965 Sanremo Festival, was among the audience when Donaggio and Miller performed "Io che non vivo (senza te)" and although lacking awareness of the lyrics meant the song made Springfield weep. Springfield earned a recording of Donaggio's acetate song, but let a year pass before actively pursuing the idea of recording an English version.

On March 9, 1966, Springfield had Donaggio's instrumental composition track recorded at Philips Studio Marble Arch: session personnel including guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and drummer Bobby Graham. Springfield still lacks English lyrics to record: finally Springfield friend Vicki Wickham, producer of Ready Steady Go! , will write the necessary English lyrics with his own friend Simon Napier-Bell who is the manager of the Yardbirds. Neither Wickham nor Napier-Bell had any experience to be seen as a songwriter: according to Napier-Bell, he and Wickham were eating out when he told him that Springfield was hoping to get the English lyrics for Donaggio and both of them lightly took on the challenge of writing "We went back to the Wickham flat and started working on it.We wanted to go to a trendy disco so we had about an hour to write it.We wrote chorus and then we wrote this verse in a taxi wherever we go. Neither Wickham nor Napier-Bell understood the Italian lyrics of the original song: according to Wickham they tried to write their own lyrics for an anti-love song called "I Do not Love You"; when the original idea proved unproductive, it was adjusted first with "You Do not Love Me" and then "You Do not Have to Love Me" completed as "You Do not Have Say You Love Me" to fit with melodic songs. Napier-Bell later became the title of his first book (an autobiographical note of British music in the 1960s) You Do not Have to Say I Love You after the song.

Springfield recorded his vocals the next day: unhappy with the acoustics in the recording booth he eventually moved to the stairs to record. Springfield was not satisfied with his vocals until he recorded 47 shoots.

Released on March 25, 1966 in the UK, the release of Springfield recording singles became a big hit and remains one of the songs most identified with it. When Springfield died of breast cancer in March 1999, the song was featured on Now 42 as a tribute.

The song hit No.1 in the UK and No.4 in the US. The song proved so popular in the United States that Springfield's 1965 album Evoody's Coming Up Dusty was released there with a slightly different song list, and was titled after the hit single (B side of the US single, "Little by Slightly "was issued in England as a separate A side and reached No.17 there). In 2004, the song made the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in No.491.

International cover version

The original Italian "Io che non vivo" has been remade by Milva, Morgan (Italian Singing Book album Vol 2 /2012), and Russell Watson (album La Voce /2010) : also Patrizio Buanne recorded "Io Che Non Vivo (You Do not Have to Say You Love Me)" - a song featuring lyrics from both Italian and English versions - for his 2007 album Forever Begins Tonight. In October 1965 Richard Anthony recorded the French rendition of "Io che non vivo (senza te)": "Jamais je ne vivrai sans toi", which serves as the title piece of the album's release. In Quebec Anthony's version of "Jamais je ne vivrai sans toi" competed with a local cover version by Margot Lefebvre with both songs ranked No.38 in the annual ranking of the top hit of 1966. Render Catalan "Io che non vivo" entitled "Jo no puc viure sense tu "is the 1965 single release for Renata. Pino Donaggio himself recorded the Spanish version of the song titled "Yo que no vivo sin ti", re-created in 1971 by AngÃÆ'Ã… © lica MarÃÆ'a for his self-titled album and in 1987 by Luis Miguel on his album Soy Como Quiero Ser , ranked Miguel's version at No.26 in Hot Latin Tracks on Billboard .

Most of the international version of the song followed the success of Dusty Springfield in 1966 with "You Do not Have Say You Love Me" and reference the lyrics to that version rather than the original Italian lyrics.

One of the earliest non-English rendering of "You Do not Have Say You Love Me" was Finnish "finances" recorded by Kristina Hautala on May 24, 1966: entering the Great Ten Finland in November 1966 - a successful Springfield Version that had culminated in No.6 in Finland earlier that month - "En koskaan" spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten peaking at No.6. Furthermore "En koskaan" was re-created by Lea Laven in 1978 release of her album Aamulla Rakkaani NÃÆ'¤in , by Kurre (fi) on her 1979 album JÃÆ'¤it Sateen Taa , by Mika Pohjonen (fi) on the release of a self-titled album in 1993, by Harri Marstio (fi) on the 1993 release of his album Sateenkaaren pÃÆ'¤ÃÆ'¤ , and by Topi Sorsakoski on the 1997 album release her Kalliovuorten kuu .

"You Do not Have to Say You Love Me" has also been translated in Croatian as "Moju ljubav nisi hteo" recorded by Nada Kne? Evi? (sr) as well as "Nemoj re? I da me voli?" recorded by Sanjalice; in Czech as "Hledej k mÃÆ'Ã… © mu srdci klÃÆ'?" recorded by Eva PilarovÃÆ'¡, and also as "JarnÃÆ' VÃÆ'ra" recorded by La? ka KozderkovÃÆ'¡ (cs); in Denmark as "Du Kan Gi 'Mig Hele Verden" was recorded by Grethe Ingmann, and also as "Jeg har ik brug for lÃÆ'¸fter" recorded by Ulla Pia (da); in Dutch as "Geloof me" recorded by AndrÃÆ'  © Hazes; in German as "Alle meine TrÃÆ'¤ume" recorded by Peter Beil (de) and also by Corry Brokken and also by Ingrid Peters, while other German translations have been recorded by Angelika Milster (de) ("Unser Traum Darf Niemals Sterben" ) and by Trude Herr ("Ich Sage, Wat Ich Meine"); in Sweden as "Vackra sagor ÃÆ'¤r sÃÆ'  ¥ corta" recorded by Marianne Kock (sv) and also Jan HÃÆ'¶iland (sv) and also Anne-Lie Rydà ©  ©; and in Spanish as "Yo que no vivo sin tÃÆ'" recorded by Iva Zanicchi.
