Ankh-Morpork is a fictitious city state that clearly displays in Terry Pratchett's Rubebis fantasy novel.

Ikhtisar
Pratchett describes Discworld's largest city on its corrupt and polluted side, and as a target of fairly regular rupture of comedic and brouhaha violence. Ankh-Morpork is also the trade capital of Discworld. As the series continues, Ankh-Morpork is increasingly described as multi-cultural (which in this case means multi-species, with populations of increasingly prominent creatures such as dwarves, trolls, vampires, gnome, bogeymen, zombies and werewolves but also human beings from the country others like Aegateans, Klatchians and Omnians) and struggling with modern real-world challenges. Even when attacked by dragons, vegetable carts still have to enter.
In The Art of Discworld Pratchett explains that the city is similar to Tallinn and central Prague, but adds that it has elements from 18th century London, 19th century Seattle and modern New York City. He also stated that since the creation of The Streets of Ankh-Morpork, he has tried to ensure that the description of character movements and locations in the book correspond to the Ankh-Morpork map; this has allowed him, and fans of the series, to visualize the story more clearly. Ankh-Morpork is also referred to as "The Great [or Big] Wahoonie" on occasion, referring to "The Great Wen" (London), or to "The Big Apple" (New York). It is stated in the Moving Image novel that "There is a saying that all roads lead to Ankh-Morpork, and that's wrong, all the way away from Ankh-Morpork, but sometimes people walk along the wrong way." There is also a strong parallel with the political, economic, social, topographical and historical structures of Florence's city-state during the Renaissance.

Geography
Ankh-Morpork is located on the Ankh River (the most polluted watercourse in Discworld and is said to be solid enough to walk on), where the lush Sto Plains clay (similar to Western Europe) meets the Sea Circle (Discworld version of the Mediterranean). This, naturally, puts him in a very good trading position.
Lying roughly the same distance from the cold tropical Hub and Rim, Ankh-Morpork is in the Discworld area equivalent to a moderate zone.
The name "Ankh-Morpork" refers to both the city itself, a walled city about five miles (8 km) across, and the surrounding suburbs and farms of its territory.
The city center divides more or less into the more prosperous Ankhs and the poorer Morporks that include the shady Shades, separated by the Ankh River.
Ankh-Morpork is built on black clay, widely, but largely built on itself; Pragmatic citizens are only built on existing buildings when the sediments grow too high because the river floods, rather than digging them up. There are many unknown basements, including the entire "cave network" under Ankh-Morpork which consists of old streets and abandoned sewers (it has been continuously stated that anyone with a good pickax and guidance can reach anywhere in Ankh-Morpork by tearing down walls in a straight line, though in Thud! added that they also need to inhale mud). Recently, the underground area has been extended by the dwarf population of the city to get around without a hitch. Recently a municipal property has been created.
Ankh-Morpork is also the city with the largest dwarf outside discs outside the ÃÆ'Ã "berwald, largely regarded as a dwarf, with more than 50,000 dwarves living there ( Truth , Fifth Elephant ).
Ankh River
Ankh parodied the Thames during the 18th and 19th centuries, as both are unhealthy and polluted. Such a parody is also seen in the Ankh-Morpork map, which clearly shows the famous Ankh River with the Thames winding around the Isle Of Dogs in London. The naming of the river is an irony, since the word 'Ankh' (?) Is the Ancient Egyptian symbol for life - because it is the River of Life, the opposite of its true appearance (although the citizens sometimes prove that 'Water' can support so many small things that stretch Must be healthy! ').
Even before entering Ankh-Morpork, the Ankh River is full of mud from the plains; by the time it got to the side of the city's sea, "even an agnostic could walk past him" (though in Truth, Arnold Sideways plays it safely by distributing his weight on the board).
The townspeople are strangely proud of this fact, even saying that "it's easier to suffocate than to drown in Ankh." They also claimed it as the purest water on the Disc, because "Anything that passes through so many kidneys must be very pure." (Reference to the adage that tap water in London is allegedly filtered by seven sets of kidneys). Due to centuries of buildup, the river bed is higher than some parts of the city. As the winter snow swells, the low rented area floods Morpork. In the spring, some parts of the river are burning, others grow small trees and Ankh sprays turn into green. Vultures seem unusual, because their feet will be eaten up by pollution. Fish are known to exist and are depicted as looking like vacuum cleaners, and explode when brought to clean water. There are many microorganisms living in the river, which Mustrum Ridcully believes is a proof that water is safe to drink - because anything that can support that much life must be healthy.
The river also prevents the barbarian invasion, because "any invasion fleet must be preceded by a group of people holding a shovel." A monument stands in the city to commemorate an event when the invasion attempt fails when the colonist's nose runs out. The magic horn in the Patrician Palace is said to explode itself in a warning. When the city was on fire, the river gates were closed, and the river rose and flew fire. It also destroyed all the buildings that have not burned yet.
In both Men At Arms and computer games Discworld Noir , Ankh is described as â ⬠Å"the only river in the world where you can draw a limestone lineâ â¬.
History
According to legend, the first city of Ankh-Morpork was founded thousands of years ago by twins who were raised by hippos (an allusion to the myths of Romulus and Remus, with hippos replacing the original wolves). It is to recall this that the hippopotamus is an animal kingdom of Ankh. One legend says that if the danger threatens the city, the eight hippopotamoi stones that guard the Kuningan Bridge will live and escape. Another legend claims that centuries ago, Discs flooded. An ark was built, containing two of every animal. When the pile of filth forty days and nights was dropped on the side, they called it Ankh-Morpork.
The original city is little more than a wall fence, surrounding the Art Tower, a mysterious origin building that might even precede the Disk itself.
At one point he had an empire, similar to the Roman Empire, which covered half the continent including neighboring Klatch. These are the days of "Pax Morporkia," another reference to Rome and their Pax Romana.
The Empire was largely the creation of General Tacticus (the second hint of "tactics" and the name of the world historian Tacitus), the greatest military mind in history. Tacticus refused to accept that the Empire grew too big to be controlled, and eventually sent to become king of Genua. As king he decided that the greatest threat to Genua was the Empire, and declared war on him (a possible reference to Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, who served under Emperor Napoleon but later, as King of Sweden, allied with French enemies, and other similar episodes in history).
This is the Golden Age, ruled by Kings of Ankh, remembered as a wise, noble and just legend. The line died about 2000 years before the present, giving way to genuine kings who were realistically corrupt and perverted and eventually led to the collapse of the empire. (This can be seen as a parody of the fictitious city of Minas Tirith, who also had a "Golden Age" many years earlier, with Kings recalled as noble and wise.)
Shortly before this, however, Alberto Malich's mage had founded the Unseen University (Act) in the Tower of Art, and Ankh-Morpork continued as a service town for the magicians.
The royalty became very humbled and the Ankh-Morpork kings who were later remembered in history as crazy and powerless, or just mad; some are named in Men at Arms :
- Queen Alguinna IV
- King Artorollo (contemporary of Alberto Malich)
- Raja Cirone IV
- Queen Coanna
- King Loyala the Aaargh (Has a rule of 1.13 seconds from coronation to murder) - The Discworld Companion
- King Ludwig the Tree (Known for issuing royal statements on the need to develop new types of frogs and similar essentials, and also responsible for the slogan of Quanti Canicula Ille In Fenestra - "How many the doggie in the window? ") - The Discworld Companion
- The King of Paragore
- King Tyrril (reigned around AM 907)
- King Veltrick III
- Webblethorpe the Unconscious
The last and worst - which is subtly remembered by Lorenzo the Kind (entirely evil that is not explicitly revealed, except that he is said to "like children very much", has a "secret room" from which "bit" must be cleaned up, his underground "machine for...") - was overthrown in the Ankh-Morpork Civil War of 1688 (derived from the founding of the Act). The question of what to do with the ousted king (no judge will try it) was resolved when he was executed by Commander City Watch, Suffer-Not-Injustice Vimes. Known as "Old Stoneface," his rule resulted in him being barred from carrying weapons (This incident parallels the British Civil War of the 1640s, and the execution of Charles I by Oliver Cromwell). After that "Old Stoneface" (the ancestors of City Watch Commander, Samuel Vimes and drama on the nickname Cromwell "Old Ironside") and Ironheads (drama "Ironsides" and "Roundhead") tried to introduce democracy, but people voted against it. After the "Old Stoneface" itself was overthrown, Ankh-Morpork was returned to a non-hereditary oligarchic system, where its leaders were still cruel tyrants, but lacked the courage to plead for divine right. Nevertheless, it is rumored that the royal lineage of the Kings of Ankh was not actually dead but continued, and that true king, Carrot Ironfoundersson, walked in the streets of the city at night. Patrician governs the city, and operates a special form of democracy "One Man, One Vote": the Patrician is Man, and he has a Vote.
Pastor Patrician, many of them oppressive and angry enough, will include:
- Olaf Quimby II
- Mess Harmony Messy
- Laughing Lord Scapula
- Frenzied Earl Hargath
- Nersh the Lunatic
- Giggling Lord Smince
- Homicidal Lord Winder
- Mad Lord Snapcase
The Winder administration is characterized by a greater amount of oppression and political violence than the norm, as described in Night Watch , leading to a popular uprising centered on Treacle Mine Road. The City Guilds had killed him and replaced the Lord Snapcase, which turned out to be a larger tyrant and was eventually replaced by Havelock Vetinari.
When Vetinari inherited the city, it was a corrupt and destroyed medieval city, as shown in The Color of Magic . This is gradually reversed, first by the overhaul of the Guild system - such as legalizing the Thieves Guild and allowing them to be responsible for stopping 'unauthorized' theft (ie any non-Guild thieves are not allowed to operate in the city) - and then by opening the city to immigration. Dwarves, trolls, gnomes, humans from across the Disc, and even undead immigrated in large numbers, make Ankh-Morpork a truly multicultural society, with the advantages and problems suggested. (The current Patrician view, which is usually pragmatic, of multiculturalism is "stronger Alloys.") With the stability and new skill base, the city has become the political capital and trade of Discworld, so much so that Sto Plains operates under the new Pax Morporkia, which operate not on the principle of "If you fight, we will kill you," but on the principle of "If you fight, we will call your mortgage."
Pantom artists are strictly prohibited. Anyone caught practicing the art is hung upside down in the scorpion hole, on the wall that says: "Learn the words." This is the only sign of tyranny under Vetinari.
Ankh-Morpork has evolved in this series. Although it still has corruption (mostly regulated in unions), it's far from being collapsed by the Going Postal and has become a high-tech country (for Disc) bordering on almost the level of steampunk technology. This city is the second most developed country of discs after the Agatea Empire. Ankh-Morpork has seen its appearance
- Fire insurance (this can cause more damage than good when people burn their own homes), first seen in The Color of Magic .
- The competent police force, first seen in Keeper! Guard! and develop steadily afterwards.
- The clause, the semaphore system used to send the number to the telegram (see the Semaphore line), was first seen in the Fifth Elephant .
- Original newspaper, first seen on Truth .
- The Post Office, or rather its resurrection, together with the first postage, was first seen on Going Postal .
- Stamps and banknotes such as those introduced by Moist von Lipwig on Going Postal and Making Money .
- Train, as seen on Raising Steam .
Evil kept in check by Watch and guild, especially Thief Guild; in the novel Jingo the character easily noted that thieves weather Guild Thief is an unofficial thief and is now dead. Lord Vetinari has strong control over the city (or it seems). The broadcasters of the Act no longer kill each other intentionally. The city is now a highly developed metropolis than the faded and ruined city of The Color of Magic. It is implied that the Axle found in Thud! will revolutionize both urban transport (with many references parallel to the London Underground including minesign symbols for mines) and machines, and the invention of Moist von Lipwig from a banknote in Making Money .
Politics
City Leadership â ⬠<â â¬
The success of the Patricians usually occurs either by murder or revolution. The Patricians are known to have resigned, but this is an exception.
Power, to a certain extent, is shared with many federations (see above) and surviving nobles. They formed a kind of city council adviser, but Patrician had the only voice at the meeting. This may be the same as the "aldermen board" called briefly in Sourcery , and called the city council in "Guardians", but never mentioned since then.
The current office owner is Lord Havelock Vetinari who is inspired by Medici, a former student at Guild Assassins.
The closest relative of the former family of the royal family appears to be Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, technically a human, but essentially a dwarf (or vice versa depending on his point of view). However, he has been trying to keep his royal connection as quiet as possible. The Origin of Cecil Wormsborough Corporal John (Nobby) Nobbs remains shrouded in mystery. At one point he was identified as the descendant of de Nobbes, the Earl of Ankh (and therefore in the next line), but this was (probably) a deliberate fraud as part of a plan to overthrow Lord Vetenari.
The Patrician has almost absolute power over the city affairs and works with city Guild leaders, who choose it through the Federal Council, as shown in Truth . In the Renaissance analogy of Florence, Ankh-Morpork is an oligarchy. Eligible for election is a rich and influential family member.
Vetinari looks somewhat more permanent than most nobles, mostly due to Machiavellian ("for Machiavelli's given value", according to Terry Pratchett). He had arranged the politics of the city in such a way that removing him from office would cause chaos between the Guild and the nobility. He firmly believes that what people want is stability, and that's what he provides.
Current "important" city number
Although Vetinari is the absolute leader of the city, he has been able to give some illusions people that they have the power:
- Mustrum Ridcully, adviser from the university wizard Unseen University, who serves as the de facto adviser to Patrician about magical things.
- Your Excellency, Sir Samuel Vimes, Duke Ankh, Commander of the City Controller and married Lady Sybil. (Also monitor ex-blackboard (Mentioned in Fifth Elephant, Thud!)).
- Mr. Downey, head of the Guild Assassins.
- Mr. Boggis, head of the Thieves Guild, Cutpurses, Money Breaker, and Allied Trade.
- Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, Captain of the City Supervisor.
- Moist von Lipwig, former impostor, now Postmaster, Head of Mint, owner of Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork Chair.
- Rosemary Palm, head of the Seamstresses Guild.
- Queen Molly, chairman of the Beggar's Lawyers.
- Hughnon Ridcully, Head of Reverend Blind Io and de facto leader of various city clerics and brother of Mustrum Ridcully mentioned earlier.
- Lord Rust, a military leader whose arrogant manner usually leads him to be careless under any circumstances he is placed as in Jingo and Night Watch and Terrible Regiments . Generally opposed and opposed by Samuel Vimes.
- Lord Selachii and Lord Venturi have a slightly smaller role than Lord Rust and are usually depicted in scenarios similar to Lord Rust.
- Mr. Slant, the zombie head of the Guild of Lawyers.
- Leonard of Quirm, the Disc's inaugural engineer and inventor of the invention acting as a catalyst in several novels, such as Men at Arms and The Last Hero.
It should be noted that traditionally the relationship between the city and Unseen University is one of cooperation, where it is stated that the University agrees to do whatever is required of them and the promises of the city to never ask, and that may be the only place where influence Patrician is reduced. For example, the city never collects university taxes ("Drilling College from Devil Devices"). According to Interesting Times, Patrician could, in theory, ask Archchancellor to call and, indeed, let him be executed; However, Archchancellor could turn Patrician into a small reptile and, indeed, start bouncing around the room on a pogo stick.
Institution
The main engine of the Ankh-Morpork economy is the guild. There are hundreds of guilds, for every possible profession, from clowns to butchers, and each has strict trade laws and practices. Many guilds have taken on the role that in real world cities will be assumed by government agencies.
Education
Because Ankh-Morpork does not seem to have anything approaching the state education system, the primary educational tool is the vocational training provided by the guild to their young members. Sawmills, for example, often fall on the doorstep of the union in the hope that they learn useful trade. The Assassins' Guild is considered the top educational institution on the Disc and, whether a person intends to be a murderer or not, is considered the school of choice for a young nobleman like Lord Vetinari of the future. It is possible to attend Guild Assassins only for learning and not murder; although many of course choose to do both. Many of the children from poorer backgrounds were educated in dame schools, similar to the Victorian England institution of the same name; Sideney (in Hogfather) and Samuel Vimes (in Thud!) Educated at the dame schools. Others attend boarding schools outside Ankh-Morpork, such as Quirm University for Young Women. Master's fellowship existed, but appeared to be in a low-handedness - on the Keepers! Guard! The sitting position of Vimes in the coronation scene is described as "at the lowest level... between the Master of the Beggar's Guild and the Chair of the Teacher Guild". This is most likely a joke based on international belief that teachers have low ratings and are paid.
Ankh-Morpork higher education institution is Unseen University, the main school of magic on Disc.
Law Enforcement
The law and protection offered by the guild is a major form of personal security of the city. The most obvious example of this is the Thieving Guild, which, by regulating trafficking in crime, acts as the principal law enforcement agency of the city; However, many of the guilds also have personal uplifters, such as Aunt Agony for Seamstresses' Guild and Bloody Fools for Guild Fools.
At the most basic level, the law at Ankh-Morpork operates on the principle that a grocery store is free to mix the soil in its coffee, and will also be investigated by every customer who happens to find out. In addition, the options are very slim. In cases of personal grievance, a person may appeal to the Guild Association, by providing, of course, a person rich enough to pay (The Lawyers' Guild considers this a very reasonable arrangement, since the poor are ordinary criminals). In addition, the only action in a criminal case is a direct appeal to Patrician, who often succeeds, because he sees highly instructive results.
Despite the opposite evidence, killing is not a common occurrence in Ankh-Morpork; Of course, there are murders, but because this is guild sanctions they are not considered to be unlawful. Ankh-Morpork, however, has a remarkably high level of suicide, primarily because of the city's view of what is suicide. For example, walking alone through the hallways of the Shades night is suicide, like a short ask in a dwarf bar. It's easy to commit suicide at Ankh-Morpork if you are not careful.
Outside the union, most law enforcement is done by Watch, under the leadership of Sam Vimes.
Revival of government
Recently, Lord Vetinari has begun to reassert state power by reintroducing old government institutions such as City Watch, Post Office and, most recently, the Royal Mint.
City Watch
City Watch is one of the biggest success stories. At first, it consisted of Day Watch, popinjays led by Captain "Mayonnaise" Quirke (rich, thick, oily, and slightly smelling eggs) and Night Watch, three unworkable men; Captain Vimes, drunk, Sergeant Colon, whose main crime idea was the bridge theft and Corporal Nobbs, who had a certificate to prove he was human. The addition of Lance-Constable Carrots is the catalyst for their reform during the novel guard! Guard! As time goes by, Watch has grown under the leadership of Commander Samuel Vimes to the most modern police forces on the Disc. That still employs three people in question.
Post Office
The Post Office of Ankh-Morpork , which was once a living and relevant institution, complete with polished brass and polished wood counters, run by a postman in a striking blue uniform, languish and near death, according to Tolliver Groat (Junior Postman, then Senior Postman and Postal Inspector), when the postman started leaving half a sack post behind to get home on time. The next day they leave half a sack again, reasoning that they can do it on their day off, with which too many letters have been awakened and so much still left. But this is just a small part of the problem.
The number of unsent emails increased dramatically by the Sorting Engine, created by Bloody Stupid Johnson. This machine is meant to accelerate postal delivery, but begins to produce letters, first from the future (which is fine, because it's seen as a truly improved delivery time) and then from an alternate universe. The reason for this is that Johnson does not approve pi, and therefore base the engine around the non-Euclidean wheel, where the radius is divided into circles exactly three times, thus creating dimensional instability. It is impossible to send all the mail, and most of them can not be sent, because they are not sent in this universe.
The Post Office was reduced to large buildings lined up from floor to ceiling with undelivered letters managed only by Junior Postman Groat geriatric, along with his colleagues who collected Stanley's pin. By the time the Going Postal had long been forgotten, the building was changed with graffiti, a letter coach adapted for passenger travel by the coachmen and the services provided seemed to be useless by the Grand Trunk Semaphore Company. Lord Vetinari then appointed Moist von Lipwig, an ex-fraudster, to restore the Post Office as a way of limiting the power of the Great Trash Semaphore Company. With Lipwig as Postmaster-General, the Post Office is returned to something close to glory. Lipwig creates stamps, giving new hobbies to young men like Stanley who was once obsessed with pin collecting. With the frenzy of various prices, scented stamps struck, Lipwig went on to restore mail coach services to cities like Sto Lat and Genua. Because the cluster lines become less reliable, the Post Office becomes a stiff competition for semaphores. In the end, Lipwig succeeds in bringing down Reacher Gilt, chairman of the Grand Trunk Semaphore Company, by using well-placed lies and thereby restoring the supremacy of the Post Office in conveying Morporkian messages. Lord Vetinari then handed the Grand Trunk company to the Moist, who planned to return it to the Dearheart family, which was unfairly taken.
The motto of the Ankh-Morpork Post Office is displayed on the front of the building, and for several years it read "NOT RAINFUL HOURS OF SNOW SNOW NOR GL OM OF NI T CAN STAY THIS MES ENGER ABO T THEIR TASK." After the appointment of Mr. Lipwig, the lost letters were in and, promising not to bring any charges and no violent usage at all by an 8 foot (2.4 m) golem holding a large crowbar, recovering from the front 'HUGOS' hairstylist, allowing the slogan to be returned to the correct spelling. By a strange coincidence, this motto is very similar to the motto of another Post Office in Multiverse. During the post office slump, the list of things that will, in fact, remain these messengers, is displayed on the bulletin board under the motto. The most notable was Mrs. Cake, which is listed twice. Mrs. Cake should not be questioned.
Currency
The AM $ (Ankh-Morpork dollar) is equal to 100 cents (pence). Under the Ankh-Morporkian tradition, ten pence can be called shilling, twenty five pence as half a ton, and fifty pence as nob/ton/half bar/tapping.
The AM $ is supposedly the most difficult currency outside the Agatea Empire. The dollar coins are Sequin (coins) sized, and although theoretically made of gold, metals have been forged many times, according to The Discworld Companion:
"There is more gold in the weight of the seawater equivalent. In a sense, then, Ankh-Morpork is on the golden standard in everything except those who really have gold to talk about"
Ankh-Morpork being a very rich city-state, AM $ is the preferred currency among the land around the Round Sea; although other city states have their own currencies, they maintain a strong relationship with the dollar, because Ankh-Morpork is the only place that has something worth buying.
In Making Money , Moist von Lipwig introduces paper currency and places the city on a golem standard.
Important location
Biers is a pub frequented by night creatures, usually put together as "undead", although they can include werewolves and bogeymen. It's hard to find unless you happen to be the "right person." This is often compared to Cheers but with the tagline "Where everybody knows your form". Susan Sto Helit is a frequent visitor to Biers. A more typical client sometimes loudly demands to know what he thinks he is doing there. They rarely do it twice. The barman of Biers is called Igor, though he does not look like Igor's an . It is best to pay attention to what he serves carefully; as Pratchett notes on Hogfather, "When Igor the carpenter was asked for Bloody Mary, he did not mix a metaphor." At some point in the past, pubs are known as The Crown and Ax ; an almost blind old man, Ny. Gammage, still frequenting the place, mistaking the cadaver staff and the customers for the previous people, no one could persuade her.
The Dwarf Bread Museum which, as the name implies, is a building where certain items of famous dwarf bread are stored; usually specimens of cultural or historical interest. First mentioned in Men at Arms ; more prominently displayed in The Fifth Elephant as the building where Scone of Stone (reference to the Stone of Scone) was stolen.
The Dysk , theater staging "drama of the hijackers-kills-kings". References to the Globe Theater.
The Mended Drum , formerly a Broken Drum (the old motto: "you can not beat it") until it burns out in the first attempt at the city of insurance fraud, is the city's premier inn. Located on Filigree Street, it is a rowdy, cloudy, crowded, smelly and really bad building, and therefore ideal haunt for most of the Disc's heroes. This is a favorite watering hole for Unseen University's students, and the regular humiliation of Librarians. It is also a favorite location for those who want to discuss clandestine business. The Broken Drum is the setting for the first encounter between Rincewind and Twoflower central characters in the first Discworld novel, Color of Magic. When Ankh-Morpork becomes more civilized in later books, The Mended Drum (new motto: "You can be beaten") is the last bastion of lawlessness even though a fight in the bar has become a team sport, with teams earning points to perform classical fighting techniques. The limbs are still cut, but they are tattooed to make sure that Igor sews them back properly. Surprisingly, this unreasonable romantic place is what Twoflower is looking naive in the Color of Magic.
The Shades , the Ankh-Morpork slums, comprising the oldest areas of the city. The moral equivalent of a black hole. Very bad place, all said (horses in Shades are often called "lunch", and nothing looks more suspicious than new paint).
Cockbill Street , located in Shades, is the poorest area of ââtown. Nevertheless, the people at Cockbill Street are so proud that they refuse to recognize this, believing the meal comes second to look after and leads to the saying that what you mostly eat at Cockbill Street "is your pride". Samuel Vimes grew up here. The inhabitants live their lives trying not to be noticed, this is best evidenced by the fact that Captain Carrot, who, if not in the first name with the entire townspeople, knows none of the population, to Samuel Vimes' astonishment.
The Isle of Gods , an area almost surrounded by the Ankh River containing Houses of Watch, theaters, prisons and publishers. References to the Isle of Dogs area in London.
Pseudopolis Yard , headquarters of City Watch. Owned by Lady Sybil Ramkin (later Lady Vimes) and donated by her when Dragon-King burned Watch House. References to Scotland Yard.
Unseen University (Act) is in many ways the heart of the city. Centered in an 800-foot Tower Tower, the tallest building on the Disc, it serves as Sto Plains' premier magic academy (and possibly the entire Discworld). The city originally grew out of the need to serve and maintain the University. Shades is technically under his control, and most of his income comes from rent there.
Civil symbol
Symbol
City weapons will be explained by blazon:
Per spooky and pale bend; first vert, right cabbage semit; second and third arguments, money bags Or; fourth sable; Altogether the three blue corrugated scarps are overcome by the Art Tower pulling out of the base and ending in the right head. For the owl symbol that is shown carrying a shield from the proper Unseen University, and gripping his grip with ankh Or. For supporters of two precise hippos, the dexter is chained and spooked by the Or coronet.
Morporkia
Morporkia is the personification of women from the city, or perhaps just from Morpork. He wore an old cabbage-shaped coat and helmet, carrying a shield with civilian emblems and forks symbolizing "something or other" (cf. Britannia, Columbia, Marianne).
Hippopotami
A pair of hippos is a symbol of the city, and flanking its emblem. There is also a hippopotamus statue on Brass Bridge; It is said that if danger threatens the city, they will run away.
Anthem
We Can Rule You Wholesale is the national anthem of Ankh-Morpork; it is a parody of the song 'Rule, Britannia!'. The use of 'ner ner ner' as official lyrics (see below) is also reminiscent of the English anthem, 'Vindaloo'.
It was not written by the original Ankh-Morporkian, but by vampires who visited Count Henrik Shline von ÃÆ'Ã "berwald (born in 1703, died 1782, also died 1784, 1788, 1791, 1802, 1804, 1807, 1808, 1821, 1830, 1861 , ultimately risking 1872). His inspiration came from his observation that Ankh-Morpork's main defense device was not a war but corruption, bribery tactics and trade, since most of the weapons used against the city were actually made there.
The national anthem is very important because it is the only one that has a second verse officially which consists of a vague murmur. Count von ÃÆ'Ã "berwald has also observed that a group of people singing their national anthem never remember how the second verse applies however , so he decides to make things easier for Ankh-Morpork. The sentiment of the song is of course summarized in the new Pax Morporkia: "If you fight, we will call your mortgage. And that coincidence my your spear is pointing me. I <" I paid for your shield grasp. And take my helmet when you talk to me, you're a horrible little debtor. "
On official occasions, the song should be played by a large soprano singer who wears a sheet and holds a torch in one hand and a fork in the other.
The lyrics of the song are as follows:
"When the dragon burps and the hippo runs away
My mind, Ankh-Morpork, is yours Let others boast a martial dash Because we have fought bravely with cash We have all your helmets, we have all your shoes.
We have all your generals - touch us and you will lose Morporkia! Morporkia!
Morporkia has a day!
We can arrange your wholesale
Touch us and you'll pay.
We bankrupted all the invaders,
We sell souvenirs,
We ner ner ner ner ner ner by ear,
Er ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner,
Ner ner ner ner ner, ner ner ner ner ner,
Attack your glittering sword, we are mortgaged to the handle Morporkia! Morporkia!
Ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner ner We can arrange your wholesale
Credit where it should be. "
The last part of the song is usually sung louder than the rest of the second verse, because the singer wants to show they know the words...
The national anthem was actually written in 1999 by Pratchett (words) and Carl Davis (music), for BBC Radio 3's program The Music Machine . It was done by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and soprano is Claire Rutter. It was also done at Prom that year by the Orchestra and Choir Prommers. The national anthem was performed in the organ before the premiere of Blown Away in Moving Pictures and was sung before a soccer match in the 2009 novel Unseen Academicals.

Real-world connections â ⬠<â â¬
Ankh-Morpork is a twin with the town of Wincanton in Somerset, in southwest England on planet Earth sphere (known in the Discworld book as Roundworld) on December 7, 2002. The city is home to a shop called "The Discworld Emporium". However, for legal reasons, the twins were not officially displayed on road signs. Fans, however, add stick-on notifications to multiple marks. This has now changed and a new city mark that clearly announces twin with Ankh-Morpork and other Roundworld places has been established. This mark is designed by Cunning Artificer himself, Bernard Pearson (of the Discworld Emporium). Some of the roads under construction of new housing in Wincanton have been named after Ankh-Morpork Roads, including the Peach Pie Road and Treacle Mine Road.
The word "Morpork" is of a New Zealand owl species called morepork, which is pictured holding ankh on the emblem.
An Ankh-Morpork pub, mentioned several times in a Jingo novel is similar in many respects to the famous pub Whitelocks in Leeds, England. The pub, famous as the oldest in town, was originally known as "The Turk's Head".
"Discworld: Ankh-Morpork" was published as a board game in 2011.
Fictional connection
Many details of Ankh-Morpork seem to be inspired by the fictional city of Fritz Leiber, Lankhmar (although Pratchett has said, "I do not - at least consciously, I think I should say - Ankh-Morpork as the Lankhmar base"); John D. Rateliff notes that Leiber characters "guest stars Gray Mouser and Fafhrd in the first Discworld story, The Color of Magic , under the pseudonyms of The Weasel and Bravd".
