Ringkasan plot

Caught in a stifling Irish town, Baile na gCroÃÆ'th, Elizabeth Egan has always been known as a serious woman, never laughing at jokes or taking pleasure from the simplest pleasures of life. This is because he was abandoned by his free-spirited mother when he was young and forced to grow quickly to care for his sister, Saoirse.

Taking advantage of Elizabeth's sense of responsibility, Saoirse has led life by abandonment, and when she gives birth to a son, Luke, she leaves Elizabeth to take care of him.

At the age of six, Luke claims to have a friend named Ivan who can not be seen by Elizabeth. Although at first he was annoyed with this imaginary friend, he started playing together with Luke when he found out that imaginary friends would only last about 3 months.

Although not seen by most, Ivan is real. Only Luke could see it, though she realized that Elizabeth could sense her presence. Knowing that only the person who really needs a friend can see it, he follows Elizabeth. When, suddenly, he can see it, Ivan is happy, but is quickly disappointed when she thinks of him as the father of one of Luke's friends. Friendships that soon turned into romance among them.

Elizabeth meets Benjamin at work, and she asks him for dinner, but Ivan prevents her from leaving by inviting him out instead. Ivan's boss, Opal, sees her love for Elizabeth and tells her own sad story. She tells him that how much she wants to be with Elizabeth will one day come when she can no longer see her and will eventually age when she will remain young. However, Ivan loves Elizabeth too much and refuses to listen. To convince him, Opal takes him to see his own love, who has become an 80-year-old man while Opal remains young.

One day, when Elizabeth had a party, she could no longer see Ivan for a while and she realized it was time to move on to a new friend. Ivan visits Elizabeth for the last time when she sleeps, explaining why she should leave. Elisabeth thought it was a dream. A few days later, Elizabeth realizes that it is not and that Ivan is Luke's 'imaginary' friend.

In 2005, Disney has gained the right to adapt the novel into a musical with Hugh Jackman as Ivan.
