Histori

On July 10, 2008, Apple released the iTunes Remote app on the App Store. On the same day, Apple released Apple TV 2.1 update software that added recognition for iPhone and iPod Touch as a remote control device. Then the revision added support for the iPad, and introduced support for new features when added to iTunes. The remote application is intended as an alternative software for Apple Remote, which allows users to control their media collection via their iOS device.

Patent filing

Unofficial software modifications to include this functionality in iOS and Apple TV OS have been there before, but Apple's rumors provide remote control capabilities between iOS and Apple TV already in place since early 2007, when the US Patent Office issued a patent filed by Apple on 11 September 2006 depicting "media player with remote control capabilities" in addition to "multi-media center for computing systems".

Features

History

The initial release, version 1.0, allows users to control the basic functionality of their media libraries, limited to many of the same functions of the physical Apple Remote Then version 1 revision adds the ability to create and edit playlists in iTunes, locate library user media, and generate playlists Genius. These features are further enhanced with the release of version 2.0, which adds support for iPad and new retina screens. Features added in version 2.0 include support for the Shared Library, and AirPlay hardware controls. Gestur is also supported, allowing users to control their Apple TV with friction similar to navigation via Cover Flow.

The next update to version 2 improves the stability of the app, and adds AirPlay video support to Apple TV. Version 2.1 also allows users to control Internet radio features from iTunes, and play movies or rented TV shows. Other additions to the later version 2 release include support for the new iTunes Match feature, and support for iOS 5 and 6. Version 2 also lets guests connect to wireless networks to request songs to be played using iTunes DJ. The interface is designed to mimic iOS Music apps when used on iPhone or iPod Touch, while iPad users control their libraries using the interface based on the iTunes desktop app.

Current version

With the release of iTunes 11, Apple updated the iTunes Remote app. The new version, which is compatible with most of the newer iphone hardware, includes a new user interface; mimicking iOS 6 Music apps on iPhone and iPod Touch, and a new iTunes 11 grid view on iPad. In accordance with the iTunes DJ removal of desktop software, the app no longer provides a function for guests to request songs. New features include the ability to view and edit Up Next lists, and enhanced dynamic search functionality that seeks content as the type of user. This version removes support for users running iOS 4, otherwise requires a minimum of iOS 5.0. Users can play, pause, or skip back and forth through their collections. They can also create or edit playlists, generate Genius results, and control the output volume of iTunes or selected AirPlay devices. When multiple iTunes or Apple TV libraries found one network, users can select the one they want to control, and exchange between them. Currently, no more than one library at a time can be added manually ; this effectively forces each user with two or more devices to enable Home Sharing if they want to use one remote for all those devices.

tvOS 9.1 (released on December 9, 2015), in addition to the 4.2.3 Remote app updates for iOS and WatchOS, restore basic app functionality to Apple TV 4th generation; text input, navigation, and control.
