Reception
Despite a slight concern from the main critics, the album met with strong acceptance of independent criticism. Absolutepunk.net received the album very positively, quoting singer Brian Fallon for having "a talent for creating lyrics and melodies that are simple and interesting, yet never forced or unintelligent." This review is also called "I'da Called You Woody, Joe" (a tribute to Joe Strummer) the spotlight of the notes, and notes the similarity between the opening songs "Boomboxes and Dictionaries" and Against Me! "Sink, Florida, Sink." Punknews.org also praised the album and made many similar observations. They called the record "the type of record most wanted by the young bands they can make to launch their music career." Unplugged's review notes that "The Gaslight Anthem combines anthemic punk-rock spirit with Springsteen-influenced storytelling (along with popular influences remembering the beginning of Against Me!) To create a convincing and addictive whole." They also expressed appreciation for Fallon's "rough vocals" and the contrast between up-tempo rockers such as "We Came to Dance" and "Red in the Morning" and acoustic folk numbers such as "The Navesink Banks" and "Red at Night."
