Plot

Eric, a boy, is very excited about his birthday after reading a book and believes that a train will come for him, much to Jill's unbelieving teenage sister. Hours later, the control tower of the railway station woke up and in the round wing, Tillie, a small light blue switcher engine, along with her bird companion Chip, built four other trains: Georgia, a good all-purpose machine, Farnsworth, a new passenger engine, disgust , new passenger engine, jebediah, worn, rusted, old, and pete, a rough, big, and powerful hauling machine. After the towers commissioned Farnsworth and Pete their work, he refused Tillie's offer to help with the milk train assigned to Jebediah because of his small stature. Georgia was assigned to pull a birthday cart. A clown named Rollo leads toys to the train, including Jeepers, monkeys, Stretch, basketball players, Missy, Ballerina, Handy Pandy, pandas, Perky, elephants, and Grumpella, a stuffed bird.

But during his trip, something damaged in Georgia caused his chimney to explode and his kettle exploded and forced him to quit and brought back to the round bar by Dock. Left behind, Rollo finally took Doc's advice to mark one of the other machines that returned from their daily journey on the mountain. Farnsworth and Pete closed their eyes on the offer, and Jebediah explained that passing the mountain was too heavy for him. Meanwhile, though the tower rejected Tillie's offer to help bring a birthday cart, he and Chip slipped through the tower and pulled the birthday cart up the mountain. Despite being ridiculed by animals along the way, Tillie managed to reach the top after crossing the collapsed bridge but lost the last train car, which stopped and fell into the river along the way.

However, the avalanche made Tillie cold. Eric was awakened by a thunderstorm and worried about Tillie and his birthday. After Tillie regains her consciousness, she pulls the train off the snow by using her cowcatcher as a snowplow and down the mountain before they reach the city, delighting Eric and amazed Jill. The movie ends with Tillie, who despite being very tired from her long and adventurous journey on the mountain, is very proud and happy and tells her best friend Chip that she is doing what she can.
