Development

After Ward signed in 2011, he and Hollywood Records took a long time to select the producer, but eventually he settled on Theron "Neff-U" Feemster, who eventually produced half the album. The album was recorded at Ahh Haaa Studios, Hyperion Sound, Rusk Studio, Boardwalk Records, Westlake Recording Studio, Eargasm Studios, and Northern Recording Studios. It's engineered in Fairfax Recordings and Sound City, and mixed in HotPurplePettngZoo. The theme for the album "is about going to war for someone you love, which is the kind of theme for the album." Ward combines several genres, such as back-porch blues and hip hop, to develop his "Shty Shine" style. Ward began working with Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle from OneRepublic on the acoustic ballad "Last Love Song", which provided a quiet moment on rock 'n soul album. The song "Criminal" takes on organ and piano songs from Freddie Gibbs "Oil Money", and also features Gibbs on vocals.
