Plot

Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) is a literary agent who uses "gift gab" to get various book transactions, and he is not afraid to extend the truth to get it. While he is trying to get a book deal from a New Age self-help expert named Dr. Sinja (Cliff Curtis), the teacher sees through his lies and agrees with the deal, only to then send a five-page book. That night, the Bodhi Tree miraculously appeared in his backyard. Dr. Satan goes to Jack's house and they both find that for every word that Jack says, a leaf will fall from a tree. When the tree runs out its leaves, the tree will perish, as does Jack. In time, he finds that the written word counts even the limit; plus anything that happens to the tree will also affect Jack. When Jack tries to cut it with an ax, an ax wound appears to him. When a squirrel climbs a tree, it tickles it. When a gardener tries to poison with DDT, Jack gets very angry and when the gardener tries to water the tree, Jack starts sweating/sweating profusely.

With Jack being forced to pick and choose his words, communicating with others becomes difficult and misunderstood. This misunderstanding led him to spend two book transactions, his work, and his wife Caroline (Kerry Washington). She walks out to him when he thinks his sudden silence is because he does not love her anymore. When he tried to explain the tree to him, he did not believe it. Only Jack Aaron's assistant (Clark Duke) realizes that he's telling the truth, and goes to Jack's house to track how many leaves are left. Jack tries to break the curse by becoming a better person by feeding the homeless, and donating some of his money to charity, but the plan fails. Jack drinks a lot of alcohol at night, causing him to sing a lot, thus making the tree lose a lot of leaves. Only when Aaron confronted him and threw him to the ground, he stopped talking.

With his messy life and a tree that was running out of leaves, he confronted Dr. Sinja and ask how to end the curse. The teacher tells him to make peace in all his relationships. With only one limb left, Jack tries to make peace with his wife, but he remains hesitant. She visits her mother, Annie (Ruby Dee), who lives in a live help center and suffers from dementia. Annie tells Jack, who he thinks is Raymond's late father, that he hopes Jack will stop getting angry at his father for walking out to them when he was a kid. Jack, realizing that this is a relationship that needs to be fixed, goes to visit his father's grave. Jack took out the last three leaves of the tree with the words, "I forgive you." With no leaves left, Jack suffered a heart attack in a storm and appeared to be dead. Aaron then calls Jack on his cell phone. Jack, still alive, answers the phone. Aaron tells him that the leaves of the tree miraculously reappear and Jack now can talk freely again.

Jack and Caroline came back together, with Jack buying the family-friendly house Caroline had requested before, and the tree was in their front yard. He did not get his job back (Aaron was promoted to Jack's old position), but he wrote a book about his experience, called A Thousand Words , and got Aaron to make a deal. Unlucky for Aaron, his promotion caused him like Jack, so he got the Bodhi tree of his smaller office.

Production

A thousand words was filmed in 2008 in Los Angeles, California and was supposed to be released in 2009, but was repeatedly postponed after being caught in the separation of DreamWorks Pictures from Paramount Pictures and Viacom. During the interview for Fred: The Movie , director Brian Robbins stated that the film will be released in 2011. Reshoot was performed on the movie in early 2011.

The film is then scheduled for release in January 2012, but after Murphy was announced as host of the 2012 Oscar ceremony (he later resigned), the film was dated March 23, 2012; this is then pushed until April 20, 2012, before being pushed to the final release date on March 9, 2012.
