Histori

Era Demo (1987-1991)

Cynic was formed by guitarist (and now singer) Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert in 1987. In 1988, the band made their first recording, simply called the '88 Demo . After the demo, Paul Masvidal took over the vocal task, while continuing to play the guitar. The band also added a second guitarist, Jason Gobel. Another demo followed in 1989, titled Reflections of a Dying World . 1989 also brought additional bassist Tony Choy. In 1990, the group went to the studio to record their third demo, with the simple title '90 Demo . In 1991, Cynic signed a contract with Roadrunner Records and recorded their fourth and final demo, known as the Demo 1991 . Recording Focus (1993)

The recording of the full-length debut album Cynic Focus did not start soon after the band signed a new contract with Roadrunner Records. Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert have played on the 1991 album Death Human and are obliged to take part in a supporting tour in Europe. During this tour, Death experienced serious financial problems, resulting in Masvidal and Reinert teeth being seized for six months by British promoters. During this time, the band parted ways with bassist Tony Choy (who joined the Atheist). Choy was replaced by Sean Malone. The band plans to record Focus in August 1992, but on the day they will begin recording, Hurricane Andrew invaded Florida and destroyed the Gobel home and band rehearsal room, which led to many months of delays. The band uses this time as an opportunity to write new material, many of which are featured on Focus . Tony Teegarden was eventually brought in to perform "aggressive vocals", but all vocal vocals were recorded by Masvidal.

Focus was released internationally September 14, 1993.

Sinis has traveled extensively throughout the world during 1993-94, including the Dynamo Open Air Festival in May 1994.

Asked in a 2012 interview at Prog-Sphere.com on Focus material, Masvidal says:

Sometimes you just run out of material and we've done a little Focus tour. It does have a history and obviously has an impact as an album, but at some point you have to move on. With another album under our belt, we'll have enough material to really give people a whole new material to focus on instead of the past. But I enjoy Focus and for me it does seem like a note representing something for us that is really honest. And I think it's a solid album, so that's cool because it gets a little bit of recognition.

First dissolution (1994-2006)

The music and personal differences stopped working on the second studio album, when the group was disbanded, with most of its members turning to a side project.

Gobel, Masvidal, and Reinert, with bassist Chris Kringel and vocalist/keyboardist Aruna Abrams, forming a short-lived Portal. Masvidal and Reinert released albums with more recent projects, indie act ÃÆ'â € on Spoke, on SPV Records and Kringel also played with them, touring the UK in 2005. Cynic members loosely reunited (playing with Bill Bruford, Steve Hackett, and Jim Matheos on various tracks) on Gordian Knot's second album, Appear .

In September 2006, Paul Masvidal announced that Sinis reunited to perform during the spring/summer of 2007. During June/July/August 2007, they played 15 shows across Europe, especially at big metal/rock festivals. The setlist consists of songs from Focus , Portal demos, cover of "Meeting of the Spirits" Mahavishnu Orchestra, and a new song, "Evolutionary Sleeper."

The reunion arrangement displays the founding members of Masvidal on guitar/vocals and Reinert on drums. Gobel, the old guitarist who played on Focus was unable to participate due to family and work commitments, and David "Mavis" Senescu was brought in as a substitute. Malone, who played bass on Focus, was unavailable due to his teaching and work commitments, and Chris Kringel, who played bass on his 1993 European tour, was brought in as a substitute. All aggressive vocals are handled by Teegarden pre-recording. All keyboards are covered by Masvidal and Senescu using guitar synths.

In early 2008, the band announced plans to complete a second studio album. Malone rejoined the lineup and Dutch guitarist Tymon Kruidenier of Exivious added, the latter contributing aggressive vocals.

Tracked in the Air and Tracked Back (2008-2011)

Traced on Air was released internationally on November 17, 2008 in Fog Season, followed by Robin Zielhorst who was added as a bassist tour.

The band is playing at the Wacken Open Air festival. The Searched in Water tour cycle begins in fall 2008 with a live support slot for Opeth on their European tour.

Beginning in February 2009, Cynic toured North America with Meshuggah and The Faceless, and from April 15, 2009 Cynic toured North America to support DragonForce.

During the 2010 tour to support Between the Buried and Me, along with the Scale the Summit and Devin Townsend Project, the band performed a live "experiment" titled "Wheels Within Wheels." Shortly after launching this new work, the band announced a new EP coming soon on their MySpace blog. Masvidal revealed in an interview plan for the upcoming EP:

'Tracked Back' is an experiment for us - the chance to play four songs from 'Searched in the Air' from within and share something new... In our explorations we have created music that is part of 'science fiction' prog folk, 'part psychedelic rock, minimalist restraint parts. This interpretation is channeled from other galaxies... For the most part, the songs refer to some of our favorite musical forms and in our own curious ways (electronics/ambient, jazz/fusion, drum n 'bass, experimental, shoegaze). There is no vocoder, no traditionally busy CYNIC riffs that are some of the most distinctive sounds, but music retains the structure of the song, integral melodic senses, harmony, and lyrical inspiration.

Then the blog on MySpace revealed that the new EP will be titled Re-Tracing .

In May 2010, Cynic announced plans for their first headlining tour in the US. Titled "Re-Traced/Re-Focused Live", the tour found Cynic debuting their album Focus overall, among other songs. The tour was co-sponsored by Decibel Magazine as the inaugural series "Hall of Fame". It started on July 22, 2010 in Los Angeles with Intronaut and Dysrhythmia as a support band. The tour ends on August 13, 2010. The last show of the tour took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; This is the first time in 16 years the band has returned to their hometown to perform.

In December 2010, the band announced that bassist Robin Zielhorst and guitarist Tymon Kruidenier were no longer in Cynic for logistical reasons and various others. In the same announcement, Masvidal and Reinert set up an approximate release schedule for Cynic's next album, stating that "a new cynical release should come at the end of 2011 on the Season Mist label", and, in addition, "[t] hey is also working for release re-recording their classic 'Focus.' "

Cynics will remain as duo, utilizing collective guest musicians and situations. Masvidal recently announced on the Cynic forum "Sean and I are interested in the idea of Cynic that evolves into a collective sort, depending on the album/tour, etc. This allows more creative flexibility, plus we can customize every situation, as it appears. Seen In the Air is basically the beginning of this idea.We love playing with different musicians like that, so this opens up a lot of possibilities. "

Cynics are represented by lawyer Eric Greif, who Masvidal and Reinert have known for more than two decades since their time at Death.

Carbon Based Anatomy and Please Bent to Free Us (2011-2014)

The Cynic website announced that the band was working on a new album and "the baby's first step in this gigantic process is being taken at the moment, creating a small embryo of songs that will turn into CYNIC songs entirely during the following months."

On September 6, 2011, Cynic announced a new EP titled Carbon-Based Anatomy which will be released on November 11, 2011 in Europe, and November 15, 2011 in the United States. This artwork was designed by Robert Venosa, the artist behind the cover artwork Focus , Involved in the Air and Tracked Back , just before his death. All bass sections on Carbon-Based Anatomy were recorded by Sean Malone, who previously also recorded bass parts into Focus and Tracing in Air .

Paul Masvidal describes this new EP as

"... both a philosophy and a musical journey, beginning in the Amazon jungle on the lips of a wise shamanic woman (as described by Amy Correia ) and ending in space."

On October 10, 2011, Cynic uploaded a song from a new EP titled "Carbon-Based Anatomy" and announced that Brandon Giffin and Max Phelps would be playing live with the band. Brandon Giffin is a former bass player for The Faceless and Max Phelps will play a second guitar and provide backing vocals. The band completed a North American and European tour to support the EP in November and December 2011.

Commenting on the musical shift from the metal elements in an interview at Prog-Sphere.com, Masvidal said:

I think each kind of note develops its own thing based on the process and I do not really know what it will sound like until we actually do it. I think Cynic is always out of the box and there has never been a traditional metal band to start, so we will probably go further in a direction that will sound more like Sinik and less than anything else familiar. It is too early to say it now - the material is there, but not as production. They're just little songs, so - let's see. (laugh)

In March 2012, Cynic was released through Season of Mist a demo album produced as a follow-up to Focus in 1995, titled The Portal Tapes .

On December 12, 2012, Cynic announced via their official website that Masvidal, Reinert and Sean Malone entered the studio in a "trio mode" to record their fifth release. They revealed the title of their third studio album and its cover on November 10, 2013, on their official Facebook page. The album, Kindly Bent to Free Us , was released on February 14, 2014.

Rumors break up, separate Sean Reinert and new music (2015-present)

On September 10, 2015, Sean Reinert announced the dissolution of Cynic due to artistic and personal differences. Later that day, however, Masvidal claimed that there was no dissolution, and that Reinert did not consult with other band mates on the matter. He also announced that the band would continue "one way or another." On September 18, 2015, it is certain that Cynic will perform without Reinert, and will recruit Trioscapes Matt Lynch drummer to fulfill the festival commitments, the German Euroblast Festival on October 3 as scheduled.

On December 9, 2017, Reinert announced his separation with Cynic, and stated that he had composed "arrangements" with Masvidal which would allow the latter to continue the band, while Reinert would continue with his "personal project."

On January 15, 2018, Cynic released digitally "Humanoid", their first song in four years, and the first with Matt Lynch on drums instead of Sean Reinert.

Music styles

Cynic's first record featured more punk, thrash and hardcore sounds, but in the 1990s their voices turned into a very complex, experimental and highly technical form of progressive metal, while still retaining their dead metal roots. Their 1990 demo featured a hyper-technical form of death/thrash, and a 1991 Roadrunner demo followed by a remarkable resemblance to Death and jazz death metal pioneers Atheist, featuring two songs from Focus in a cruder, more brutal form. Many influences from jazz and jazz-rock fusion can be heard on their debut album Focus . Focus has vowel "growl" and "robot", using vocoder. The offshoot portal then released a demo tape that continued further toward the progressive space rock, perfecting and softening its voice.

The 2008 Cynic album Tracing in Air merges with the style and effect heard in 1993 Focus with a more progressive Portal approach. As a result, Cynic did not emphasize the extreme metal elements, with Tymon Kruidenier's new vocalist Tymon Kruidenier playing a smaller role than Tony Teegarden did in Focus. In addition, Paul Masvidal all abandoned the sound of his robot vocalist, choosing a more natural singing voice, with a smoother vocoder layer - which raises an octave of his voice.

Noting the progressive metal journey, The New York Times proclaimed in a positive review of Visible on Air that "Cynicism should be understood not so much along with any metal band but along with progressive radical harmonics in the last 45 years of pop and jazz: composers like Milton Nascimento, The Beach Boys or Pat Metheny.
