Plot

Brooklyn, 1942, Evelyn Kurnitz has just died after suffering a long illness. Her husband, Eddie Kurnitz, needed to take a job as a traveling salesman to pay for the medical bills, and decided to ask her firm and straight-talking mother, from whom she was a little alienated, if her teenage sons, Jay and Arty (the Grandmother they insisted on calling with their full names, Jacob and Arthur, whom he said "Yakob" and "Artur"), could stay with him and Aunt Bella Kurnitz at Yonkers. He refused. After the threat by Bella, she lets them stay without ever saying they can stay. Although their grandmother owns and operates a candy store, Jay and Arty do not like their new life situation because they are afraid of their Grandmother, and find it hard to get in touch with their crazy Aunt Bella, whose slow mental state is manifested by the immortal. stimuli and short attention spans, which appear as childlike attitudes. Into their collective life returns one of Eddie's and Bella's other brothers, Louie Kurnitz, a henchman to some gangsters. She's hiding from Hollywood Harry, who wants what Louie stole and hides in her little black bag. Jay and Arty's mission became a way of making money quickly so they could help their father and get back together, which probably meant stealing the $ 15,000 that their Grandmother hid somewhere. Bella's mission is to find a way to tell the family that she wants to marry Johnny, her sweetheart in the equally sluggish theater; both can also use the $ 5,000 Granny's hidden money to open their dream restaurant. And Louie's mission is to survive the next few days. \

Character

Jay : He's fifteen "and half" years old. He insisted on "half". His mother's death forced him to become more mature than he was ready when his father left him and his younger brother with his family so he could sell scrap metal during World War II. The drama tells the story of his future. Originally played on Broadway by Jamie Marsh.

Arty : Jay's younger brother, aged 13 "and half" year. More than an observer from the rest of his family, he often walks with the flow of things, but can also be a bit childish. Originally played on Broadway by Danny Gerard.

Bella : Jay's thirty-five-year-old aunt. He is sometimes somewhat out of the center and experiences mental challenges, but despite this he also loves and protects his nephews. Part of the second half of the drama focuses on his efforts for independence from his harsh mother. Originally played on Broadway by Mercedes Ruehl.

Louie : Jay, an exuberant uncle, in his 30s, who came to live with his family while he was hiding from the local mob. He was considered by Grandma Kurnitz as the "survivor" of the family. He has a certain strong, agile, and underlying dark nature, which the children open in the second half of the drama. He works as a "bag-man" for the masses. Originally played on Broadway by Kevin Spacey.

Grandma Kurnitz: Jay's grandmother. A very old and hard woman, an immigrant from Germany. Due to his harsh childhood, he is always very intolerant of what on the other hand he calls "weakness". He is rude, sometimes even in a funny way, and always knows what's going on with the people around him. Originally played on Broadway by Irene Worth.

Eddie : Jay's middle-aged father. After the death of his wife, he was forced to send his two sons to live with their grandmother, while he repaid his huge financial debt. He proved, like his sisters, a nervous accident around Grandma. Originally played on Broadway by Mark Blum.

Gert : Aunt Jay, and Grandma's daughter. She is a very interesting addition to the family. The most striking problem is when he breathes he has a tendency to suck while still speaking, as a result of the trauma that his grandmother instilled from a young age. Originally played on Broadway by Lauren Klein.
