"Early One Morning " (Roud V9617) is a British folk song with lyrics that were first discovered in publications as far back as 1787. A ballad spread in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, dated between 1828 and 1829, has the title " The Lamenting Maid "and refers to a lover who goes to become a sailor.
The now famous melody was first printed by William Chappell in its publication National English Airs c.1855-1859. The melody may have come from the previous song "The Forsaken Lover". Chappell writes in his book Old Time's Old Music :
If I were asked to name the three most popular songs among the servants of the present generation, I must say, from my own experience, that they are Cupid's Garden, I sow seeds of love ⬠<â ⬠, and Early morning . I have heard Early one morning sung by servants coming from Leeds, from Hereford and from Devonshire, and by others from the section closer to London. The song... is, I believe it was first printed in my collection.... from one of the song books compiled by Ritson, and strangely enough that almost two copies agree outside the second line, even though the subject is always the same - a complaint of a girl over lost his lover.

Other versions:
Early morning right at sunrise,
I heard a young waiter singing
in the valley below.
Oh, do not cheat me, Site Oh, do not leave me, Site How can you use
A poor girl so?
Remember that oath You make me really,
Remember how soft You are close to me.
Gay is a wreath Fresh is a rose I was taken from the garden
to bind you.
Here I am now wandering myself as I wonder Why did you leave me? sigh and moan.
I asked about roses why should i be abandoned,
Why should I stay here in sorrow?
Through the wilderness near the flowing springs,
There you and I are playing very cheerfully,
Kissing and courting and gently exercising,
Oh, my innocent heart you betrayed.
Soon you will meet another beautiful girl,
Some pretty girls,
You will try him for a while.
So, ever start
turn around and change,
Always looking for a new girl.
It's like singing the girl,
his grief misses
Thus the waiter sung in the valley below
Oh, do not cheat me, Site Oh, do not leave me, Site How can you use
A poor girl so?
