Plot

In 1993, Jerry Shepard was a guide at the Antarctic research base under contract with the National Science Foundation. UCLA Professor, Dr. Davis McClaren, arrived at the base. He presses Shepard to take him to Mount Melbourne to find a rare meteorite from Mercury. Shepard decided that the only way to reach Mount Melbourne was by dog sled.

Shepard and McClaren made it to Melbourne Mountain, but were recalled to the base due to a severe storm approaching. McClaren begged more time, and Shepard gave him half a day, which was enough time to find a meteorite shard. On the way back to the base, McClaren slid a dike, broke his leg and fell into the frozen water. Shepard uses Maya's main dog to bring the rope to McClaren and pull it out. Two conditions of combat hypothermia, frostbite, and almost white when the dogs take them home. Once there, the entire human crew was immediately evacuated, while the dogs were abandoned. Certain that their pilot will return within a few days to the dog, Shepard tightens their collars to ensure they can not escape and escape. But because of the harsh weather conditions, there was no rescue effort until next spring - and by that time the dogs would die.

Upon returning home, Shepard tried to secure the plane to return and rescue the dogs, but no one was willing to finance a risky expedition. Five months later, Shepard made one last attempt to return. McClaren was aware of the magnitude of his ignorance and used the rest of his money to finance the rescue mission. Shepard admits that there is hardly a chance that the dogs survived all this time, but he owes his team back for them.

After being abandoned, eight sled dogs - Maya's main dog, Old Jack, Shorty, Dewey, Truman, Shadow, Buck, and young Max, waiting in frost for Shepard's return. After two weeks without eating, they break free to find food, except Old Jack who remains tied to the chain. Sometime later, Dewey slips and falls onto a slope, where he is severely injured. The team stayed with him until morning, but had to leave. In a snowstorm, Max became separated from the group. Maya manages to lead the team to an unsafe, food-filled Russian base, while Max finds his way back to the American base, which is still locked and abandoned. After returning to the desert, Max discovers the dead Orca carcass, but is driven by the leopard seal. Maya and the team are close, and Max lures the seal so the team can eat. It doubled back and attacked Maya, who was mortally wounded when clapping his jaw like a reptile to the soles of his feet. The team, now reunited, continued the journey. They were starving, freezing and tired, and finally the wounded Maya collapsed into the snow. The dogs lay beside their leader as snow piled up around them. They have been alone for nearly six months.

Shepard made her return to the base and was disappointed to find the body of Old Jack, still attached to the chain, and no sign of any other dog. He heard the sound of barking and saw Max, Shorty, Truman, Shadow, and Buck appearing on the horizon. After an exhilarating reunion, Shepard tries to put the dog into a snowmobile, but Max escapes, with Shepard in pursuit. Max leads her to Maya, lying in the snow - weak, but alive. With six of his eight sled dogs, Shepard returns to civilization.

An ill-fated 1958 Japanese expedition to Antarctica inspired the 1983 hit movie Antarctica , where Eight Under was a remake. Eight Under adapted the events of 1958, moving forward to 1993. In the 1958 event, fifteen Sakhalin Husky sled dogs were abandoned when the expedition team could not return to the base. When the team returned a year later, the two dogs were still alive. The other seven are still chained and dead, five are unknown, and one dies outside Showa Station.

The film is dedicated to the memory of Koreyoshi Kurahara, director of Antarctic , who died four years before its release.

Sled dog

In Eight Below there are two Alaskan Malamutes (Buck and Shadow) and six Siberian Huskies (Max, Maya, Truman, Dewey, Shorty, and Old Jack). Each dog-actor gets help from another dog who stunts and pulls a sled. Overall, over 30 dogs were used to describe eight dog characters. Max, Maya, Dewey, and Buck (double stunt Old Jack) are played by dogs seen at Disney's Snow Dogs. Animal filmmaking is overseen by the American Humane Association, and the film carries the standard "No animals harmed..." disclaimers, despite incidents in which a trainer uses significant force to stop animal fights.

Critical reception

In the review aggregator of Rotten Tomatoes, the film ranked 72%, based on 146 reviews. The critical consensus of the site reads, "Featuring a stranded muted star, who deftly displays emotion, tenderness, loyalty and determination, Eight Underneath is a moving and exciting adventure movie." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, and said " Eight Under succeeded as an effective story." The BBC likes the movie too, but does not like its length (2 hours). Reel.com loves it, saying "the movie manages to draw you to their incredible adventure". However, the San Francisco Chronicle disliked the movie, saying: "The movie is too long and too strong for little kids, but it's filled with too adolescent dialogue and storylines to thrill adult audiences." William Arnold of Seattle Post-Intelligencer reacted positively ("dog actor will melt your heart"), but points out, as did other reviewers, that "Antarctic fans" will be critical of mistakes, such as describing events in the middle of winter in "a warm and overflowing daylight at a time Antarctica is locked in darkness all the time and temperature is 140 degrees below."
