Like Mike is the 2002 American comedy film, directed by John Schultz and written by Michael Elliot and Jordan Moffet. The film stars Lil 'Bow Wow, Morris Chestnut, Jonathan Lipnicki, Brenda Song, Robert Forster, Crispin Glover, and Eugene Levy, following an orphaned basketball boy after finding a pair of Michael Jordan shoes. It's produced by NBA Productions and features a cameo appearance by NBA players. The film was released on July 3, 2002 by 20th Century Fox.

The film is followed by a stand-alone sequel, Like Mike 2: Streetball, which was released four years later on June 6, 2006.

Plot

Calvin Cambridge and his two best friends, Murph and Reg Stevens, live in an orphanage. Murph is the youngest of the trio, and has a fraternal bond with Calvin. At night they all have to sell chocolate to the awkward orphanage director Stan Bittleman after every NBA (fictitious) home game, the Los Angeles Knights.

Calvin met with the team coach, who was impressed with Calvin's knowledge of basketball and honesty about chocolate and offered Calvin tickets for the next game. Inside the donut shop, Calvin found a pair of old shoes worn by Michael Jordan. Calvin sneakers are taken by a jealous bull named Ox who throws them into an overhead power line. When Calvin tried to pick it up that night in a rainstorm, he was shocked by lightning.

Calvin and his friends attended a basketball match between the Knights and the Minnesota Timberwolves. After the second quarter ends, team star player, Tracy Reynolds, prepares for a part-time contest. Calvin's ticket number was called and he went one on one with Tracy. Calvin ended the contest with a dunk after bouncing the ball off the board. Murph, Reg, and surprised people gave Calvin a standing ovation. Calvin signed a one-day contract by the Knights. Calvin prepared for his first match with the Knights, but realized he was not there to play. When the Knights played the San Antonio Spurs, they started to lose badly and Coach Wagner decided to let Calvin play in the fourth quarter. Calvin leads the comeback against Spurs and they win, leading to Calvin earning a season contract. Reynolds became his mentor since Calvin was a minor. Calvin brings teamwork to the Knights and makes them one of the best teams in the league. Tracy began to respect Calvin after Calvin got into trouble while ensuring that Tracy did not miss the curfew.

Bittleman signed a contract with the team that all Calvin's money would be handed to him until Calvin was eighteen or adopted. When the second option would be correct, Bittleman grew desperate and stole Calvin's shoes and bet $ 100,000 against the Knights.

After convincing Ox and his friends that Bittleman was selfish, Ox took the boots from Bittleman's safe. Children headed to the arena with Calvin sneakers. Bittleman escaped and sent the thugs after Calvin in a failed attempt to steal his shoe back. Calvin made it to the arena with his shoes after the 3rd quarter ended with Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors who routed the Knights 80-59.

In the 4th quarter of the last regular season, Calvin was put into the game by coach and Knights started making a comeback. After the pile at the end of the game, Calvin's shoes were crushed with the Knights down by one point. Without shoes and wanting to be a normal kid, Calvin sadly told this team would be his last game. In the final drama, Calvin manages a fake pump to make Vince Carter jump and pass the ball to Tracy. Tracy made a shot that won the game to earn the Knights as their first playoff appearance. After the game, Calvin bid Tracy and Coach Wagner goodbye.

Upon returning to his orphanage, Calvin was shocked by the return of Tracy and his intention to adopt him. Calvin agreed on the condition that he also adopted Murph (whom Tracy had previously met and binded with), did not want to leave him. Reg was later adopted by different families, though they all still kept in touch. Bittleman lost because he did not have enough money to pay bets and the orphanage is now sponsored by the Knights.

Like Mike grossed $ 51.4 million in North America and $ 10.8 million overseas with a worldwide gross of $ 62.3 million, against a budget of $ 30 million. The film opened fifth at the box office with a 3-day gross of $ 12.2 million from 2,410 theaters and $ 19 million for its opening five days.

Critical response

At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 57% approval rating based on 97 reviews, and an average rating of 5.5/10. The critical consensus of the site reads, "A fun and harmless diversion for kids, but adults may have trouble to sit through predictable plotlines and schmaltz. " At Metacritic, he scored 47 out of 100, based on 27 critics, showing "mixed or average reviews". Viewers surveyed by CinemaScore gave this movie an average rating of "A" on a scale of A to F.
