" Gently, when I Leave You " is a popular Italian song, originally titled Piano , composed by Giorgio Calabrese with Italian lyrics by Tony De Vita, translated into English by Hal Shaper.
Originally was Italian success by Mina, at the Sanremo Music Festival, entitled "Piano" ("Softly"). Mina published her first track record as a single in 1960 and later also on the EP and three LPs.
The English-language songwriter, Hal Shaper, noticed the song and in November 1961 wrote the English lyrics to the melody, calling it "Soft, when I Left You." The most notable version is the one by Matt Monro (No. 10 on the UK Record Retailer chart in 1962) and Frank Sinatra (No. 27 on Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Easy Listening chart in 1964). The Sinatra family announced Frank's death on May 14, 1998 by placing an announcement on their website accompanied by a recording of the singer's version of the song.
When he performed the song live in Las Vegas, Elvis Presley started with a story about the origin of the song. Presley said the song originated when a man was dying and his wife sat beside his bed. When she started to fall asleep, she felt herself starting to die and she wrote the words for the song in notepad. However, the insider Elvis claims that his explanation for the song is just an example of Presley's talent for storytelling, so the explanation is most likely apocryphal. Elvis said he heard the story "from some people in Florida." Elvis did not actually sing this song; she uttered the words while her tening backing Sherrill Nielsen sang it. One version of Elvis's recording of this song is pirated by fans at the Las Vegas Hilton show on December 13, 1975. RCA was able to release it commercially later and now appears on the box set Walk i Mile In My Shoes: The Essential 70's Masters .
