"Til It Happens to You " is a song produced and performed by American singer Lady Gaga. He co-wrote the song with Diane Warren's 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground , which dealt with rape campus in the United States. The song was leaked onto the Internet through an unofficial recordings made at the premiere of the film at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015. It was later released by Interscope Records to digital retailers on September 18, 2015. The director and producer of the film have been looking for someone influential to write songs for it, and musical superintendent Bonnie Greenberg contacted interested Warren. He wrote the song with producer Nile Rodgers Gaga and accompany them during the recording, giving her advice.

A universal song about all forms of loss in life, "Til It Happens to You" is placed for two sequences in the film, highlighting the pain of a sexual assault. The song consists of orchestral productions with strings, and emotional vocal delivery from Gaga. The lyrics ask the listener to stand in the victim's position and try to understand the turmoil they are experiencing. "Til It Happens to You" was later included as part of a public service announcement video directed by Catherine Hardwicke. This video illustrates various examples of violence against women and sexual violence. It ends with a warning note about the effects of such distress, and people find comfort with their close friends and relatives.

A portion of the proceeds from retail sales is donated to organizations that support victims of sexual violence. Commercially, the song reached the top thirty in Finland, Greece and Spain, and reached number 95 on Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in March 2016. "Til It Happens to You" won an award at The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards for Extraordinary Music and Lyrics and was nominated for Best Written Songs for Visual Media at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, and for Best Original Songs at the 88th Academy Awards, along with awards.

Background and release

"Til It Happens to You" was written by Diane Warren and Lady Gaga, and was recorded by the latter for The Hunting Ground (2015), a documentary on college rape in the United States. Directed by Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering wanted someone with a "big" influence to record a song for the film, believing that it would generate publicity and promote the subject. They contacted executive producer Paul Blavin, explaining their idea and adding that they did not have the resources to find someone. Blavin began searching and meeting musical superintendent Bonnie Greenberg, who introduced him to Warren. Warren is moved by the idea that says: "I can not write songs for you, and not only can I not write a song for this movie, I'll give it to you." He wrote the song after seeing the scene from the movie almost a year before the song's release. Warren then calls Gaga and plays a rough demo, but is unsure about his involvement. So he decided to fly to New York and try to work with Gaga; the latter received the song and decided to record it. Warren says about Gaga's songs and contributions:

I heard about [the movie] and it really touched me, and he has things in his life that he can rely on. Gaga is one of the most talented artists I have ever worked on in my life and I am happy to do more with her... There are many levels for this song. There is something very vulnerable about it and something that is strongly against it, especially the way [Gaga] sings it. The first verse is vulnerable - 'You say that it will get better?' - and the second stanza comes and it builds. Very? Getting better? No. You do not know until it happens to you...

Warren also added that the song's message is universal and can be attributed to all the disadvantages faced in life. Gaga, who she was a rape victim, revealed during the Producers Guild of America Awards 2015, that the theme of the song is important to her family as well. His father's sister Joanne had been sexually assaulted while attending college, and subsequent torture worsened her prevalent lupus, resulting in her death and greatly affected Gaga's family. The singer was involved with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo's push for a new law to help eradicate "rape culture" at American universities, signing a letter in favor of him. Entitled "Enough is Enough", the law came into force in July 2015.

The documentary features two versions of the song, one during the body of the film and the second at closing, and highlights the sequence of pain caused by sexual violence. When a song is played, the main subject, an attacker, remembers the effects of rape while walking around the campus. Ziering concluded that having Gaga sing a song fulfilled their need for publicity because he "[brought in] other demographics.Anyone who has such a platform to reach out to all sorts of people who might not be interested in your problem... is incredible." "Til It Happens to You" leaked to the Internet before it was officially released, through an unofficial recording made at the movie premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. In April 2015, Warren confirmed that the song will have an official release and awaits the latest audio recording by Gaga. It was later released as a digital download single on September 18, 2015.

Recording and composition

In an interview for the Billboard podcast, Nile Rodgers talked about recording sessions and working with Gaga and Warren. She has met Gaga at a party and she invites her to join them in the studio. During the recording, Gaga was singing in D tone, above the F note of the music being played. Rodgers suggested to Warren that because vocal D made the song sound like a country song, they could instead turn the chord into thirteen (one octave plus sixth), thus serving the dominant function. Warren accepted the suggestion and the song was re-recorded. Gaga is rumored to have trouble recording a song, because it makes her remember her own trauma. Warren explains that it is: "very emotional for her.He can not even talk through it at the time". Gaga tells the interviewer with Variety that Warren has helped her feel comfortable about her songs and course material, enabling her to go beyond singing and put the true emotional depth in her appearance.

When Diane first played me what she started with the song, I did not have to convince about the note... it was about sharing my part with the world... We talked a lot about what I felt the song needed for reach as many young people as possible. I feel that it does not need to stay in a pure emotional state, but it will somehow grow throughout the show and song and in the end, sort of full of rage. I feel like what this song accomplishes is a woman - or a man - gets up to say, 'You think you can hurt me? You do not know about power. Because after what you do to me, you do not even know how strong I am. '

"Til It Happens to You" is a grim tone that features the production of the orchestra and strings that are soaring. Pop ballad conveys an empowering message: "Hold fast and be strong/When you fall, you must wake up", and have been described as "stirring and emotional". Featuring a classic production, the song emphasizes Gaga's vocals, keeping the focus on the lyrics, which explains that one can not understand the feelings of the victim unless they are in the same situation. The first verse is sung by Gaga in a vulnerable voice, which gradually turns into an aggressive tone, and finally a joy during the final lyrics. According to the music sheet published on Musicnotes.com, "Til It Happens to You" is set in the general time mark for a slow tempo of 59 beats per minute. These are arranged in A minor key with Gaga's vocals stretching from E 3 to D 5 . This song follows the basic order of Am-C-F maj7 -C-G/B as its chord.

Critical reception

Jeff Benjamin of Fuse noted that the song contained a "strong message" while the composition inspired the ballad song "biting" like "Dope". Brennan Carly from Spin says that the song "highlights evocative sound [Gaga]" and is similar to the tone for "Speechless" and "Gypsy". While reviewing the documentary, Leslie Felperin from The Hollywood Reporter said that the song gave an "extra hint of pain" in the film. Lauren Valenti of Marie Claire describes the track as "strong and orchestra", adding that the lyrics "command attention". He praised the decision to make Gaga sing a song, considering his relationship to sexual harassment. Bradley Stern of MuuMuse also compares it with "Dope" and "Speechless", while comparing string settings with Lana Del Rey music. Stern describes it as a "massive production" that praises the lyrics in a straightforward way. For Manohla Dargis of The New York Times, Dick managed to change the documentary gloom with the entry of the song. Spencer Kornhaber of The Atlantic praised Gaga's song and vocals, saying that: "Even with such moody material, [singer] booming delivery and dramatic phrases might remind people at a time when [Gaga 2009 single] Bad Romance 'ruled the radio. "

Declaring the song "Gaga" the most evocative "release, Michelle Geslani of Consequence of Sound calls the song:" a very strong and sweeping number - it's not just any ordinary pop song. "Christopher Tapley from Variety praised the songwriting of Gaga and Warren, describing it as: "something from the national anthem for... This is one of the strongest contenders in this year's race for the best original song [at the Academy Awards]. But much more than that, it is a rallying cry for a movement. "Lisa Wright wrote on NME that the song was:" cheap piano ballads that fit the topic with lyrics depicting frustration told to lift themselves and continue by people who may not understand your situation. "Idolator Robbie Daw claims that a" strong, disturbing "visual is praised by Gaga's" strong vocal performance "Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone calls it an" evocative track ", which highlights Gaga's vocals and believes it was "a perfect follow-up to [Gaga's Cheek to Cheek] album with Tony Bennett." Spanos added that "[Academy Award winning will be a victory] after the critical and commercial loss [Gaga] with the latest album Artpop and help solve Warren's losing streak on the show. "

Music video

Development and synopsis

In August 2015, it was announced that the song would be released as part of a public service announcement video (PSA), directed by Catherine Hardwicke, to raise awareness about sexual assault on campuses. The Hollywood Reporter describes it as casting "an emotional spotlight on young women in vulnerable situations easily understood by students". Hardwicke said of PSA's important message: "You can not watch a documentary without shouting on the screen, we try to capture the stories in a very profound way and add another voice to this powerful call to action." Production costs are borne by film executive producers Paul Blavin and Regina K. Scully. The video was released on the same day as the digital release, with Gaga tweeting links into it and adding: "We hope you feel our love & solidarity through the song & may find peace knowing you are not alone through this movie." Warren believes that the PSA video highlights his observations about the victims who came to the front to talk about the attacks on them:

Looks like it's all coming out of the dark closet in... It's a secret. That's not what you're talking about. But now, people say, 'We will not be victims again, we'll call you there, whether it's on campus or anywhere else'. I want [people] to know that they are not alone and they are not victims, but they are survivors.

The clip depicts sexual assaults against women, and how they overcame the incident. The black-and-white video opens with a warning message: "The following contains graphic content that is emotionally disturbing but reflects the reality of what happens every day on college campuses." It then shows a girl walking through an empty corridor, followed by young people in various activities on campus: reading (played by actress Nikki Reed), a trans man adjusting her braids in the bathroom, attending a party (one of the party audiences depicted by actress Kiersey Clemons). However they are all sexually harassed, with one scene showing some young girls drugged and raped at the party. The heartbroken girls and trans men cry, while alternative images show them expressing their emotions by writing words to themselves. In the end they find comfort and hope in friendship, and leave the campus with their friends, because the words written on their bodies turn into positive messages. Near the end, the music video featured a message: "One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes", after which the message leads the audience to the Facebook page for The Hunting Ground and Itsonus.org, the White House support website for people who have experienced sexual crimes. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of digital songs will be donated to organizations that support victims of sexual violence.

Reception and analysis

Kornhaber describes the video as "a curious and socially conscious curve" but wonders why Gaga released a PSA-like video, adding that he has: "always good at surprises, and unfortunately, there is no better time than others when it comes to discuss the problem he was singing about ". Christopher Rosen from Entertainment Weekly described the clip as "powerful, annoying and emotional". Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Radhika Sanghani stated that every scenario in the video looks realistic and writes: "by ensuring different attacks on the scene, scenarios and appearances of both rapists and victims, Gaga breaks myth there 'typical rape' ". Corinne Heller from E! believes that the video is "graphic, emotional and hard to watch" capable of conveying a "strong message", which is close to Gaga because of the experience of rape in real life. Wright describes the video for NME as "rendering brutal, monochrome" subject matter, with a terrible "rape" depiction. He added that the rape statistics at the end of the video were "dreadful" but praised Gaga for using her popularity to promote awareness of the subject. Loretta Donelan from Bustle believes that Gaga's previous music video has a political aspect but is open to interpretation. But with the music video "Til It Happens to You", he shows maturity by displaying "horrific scenes of gradual sexual assault".

Alex Rees of Cosmopolitan felt that the video contained "uncomfortable footage", but added that "disturbing emotion" images were able to reflect the true reality of what happened on campuses. Claire Hodgson from the same publication described the clip as "a beautiful clap short film, a brilliant action", which "really does not hold back when it comes to portraying the real horror of sexual assault in the most graphic way possible". Emily Shire of The Daily Beast is positive about the clip, calling it: "both horrible and beautiful. The overall effect is just as much, if not more, the credit for the infamous director Catherine Hardwicke. The brutality of this snapshot scene is very moving in the most frightening and most disgusting way ". However, Shire was disappointed with one aspect of the PSA - that the victims were supported by their friends and close ones and that was enough to overcome the trauma. Instead Shire wanted to see the legal consequences of the traumatic incident, with the victim going to the police. Shire concludes a review that says: "Gaga and Hardwicke deserve the props to create a strong, visceral, and aesthetic PSA They have brought much attention to rape and sexual violence, but attention is not enough for victims, rape." , And Solomon of Fast Company believes that the video is an "important statement" of Gaga and believes that it will direct further attention to The Hunting Ground .

Live show

Gaga performed "Til It Happens to You" for the first time on October 29, 2015 at the annual amfAR gala, along with cover versions of "Call Me Irresponsible", "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" and "La Vie en rose". She also performed the song at the Billboard Women in Music event on December 11, 2015, where she was awarded for the Woman of the Year. The song is also performed at an intimate meeting at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. The audience consists of filmmakers and rape victims featured in the documentary. Gaga reportedly became emotional while doing the song, and thanked the filmmakers for incorporating the songs in the movie. He also performed at the 2015 Guild of America Generation Awards, where The Hunting Ground won a special recognition trophy. American actress Ferrera introduced Gaga but she did not appear on stage for occasionally causing moments of "nervous laughter from the audience" as Ferrera tried to joke about the situation, until the singer finally arrived in front of her piano on stage.

Gaga performed the song at the 88th Academy Awards after an introduction by Joe Biden, vice president of the United States. She sings it while sitting in front of a white piano, and nearing her conclusion, over 50 victims of sexual violence join her on stage, with words like "congratulations" and "not your fault" written on their bodies. Mike Ayers of The Wall Street Journal called it "a touching show" that night. Katie Atkinson of Billboards listed the show as one of the best moments of the awards show, saying that Gaga "made a big impact on the Oscar stage. His appearance would be pretty strong, but when the curtain opens behind it to reveal an ocean of sexual assault who stands in solidarity, the emotional bar is elevated to the next level. "Kesha performed the cover of the song, accompanied by Warren at the piano, at the Humane Society Gala in Los Angeles on May 7, 2016.
