"Wish I Could Fly " is a Swedish pop duet song, Roxette, released on February 1, 1999 as the lead single from their sixth studio album, Have a Nice Day. An orchestral pop ballad containing elements of electronics, the song was written as an experiment by Per Gessle, who tries to establish whether a prominently placed drum loop will fit together with a large orchestra. Composition and style

"Wish I Could Fly" is an orchestral pop ballad containing electronics. According to liner notes from the 2002 duo compilation of The Ballad Hits , the song was written by Per Gessle as an experiment to "see how the rotating drum machine would fit a large orchestra, but quickly evolved into something more substantial." Vocalist Marie Fredriksson described it as "a very special song for me, one of my all-time favorite songs, Roxette, I never get tired of this." The Spanish version of the song, titled "Quisiera volar", was included as a bonus track on the deluxe edition Have a Nice Day .

According to Ultimate Guitar, "Wish I Could Fly" has a fairly slow tempo of 80 times per minute. The song is composed around complex chord progressions and orchestras, but the basic chord structure consists of four repetitions of sequence A? -F-Gm-A? -C during introduction. Each verse consists of four repetitions of the Gm-A sequence? -C, followed by a choir consisting of F-Dm-Gm-C-F-D? -A? -C. This bridge consists of three G-C-G-D progressions, followed by two short progressions of the Dm-F-G sequence, while the outro is based around three Cm-D length bars? -F.

Commercial performance

The song became a big hit for the duo, culminating in the top thirties of various record charts across Europe and ending in 1999 as the most played song on European radio. The single charted the highest in Hungary, where it reached number one and in Italy and the original Swedish duo, reaching number four in both countries. It was certified gold in both areas for shipments of over 25,000 and 15,000 units, respectively. The single also top ten in Finland and Iceland, the top twenty in Belgium, Norway and Switzerland, and the top thirty in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Polish Airplay Chart. It culminated in the top twenty of Europe Hot 100 Singles 'Billboard ' .

Roxette performed the song at famous events in the UK, including the Party's annual event aired at Park's concert at London's Hyde Park, and on BBC One's Top of the Pops. "Wish I Could Fly" peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the highest chart single in the country since "Almost Unreal" reached number seven in 1993, though it also proved to be their top 40 British hit. While Have a Nice Day not released in the USA, updated and repackaged edition of their 1995 compilation Do not Bore Us, Get to Chorus! Roxette's Greatest Hits was released there in September 2000 by Edel Records. The new edition of this compilation includes "Wish I Could Fly" and the next single "Stars", with the first being serviced to adult adult radio format from July 2000. The song peaked at number 27 on Billboard > ' s Adult Contemporary Chart, and at number forty on Adult Top 40.
