The music video, directed by Niels Alpert, is set in high school. Emerson Hart is shown as a janitor in the hallway and plays with his band in the gym. Scenes with cheerleaders wearing uniforms with the word LOVE in the gym are punctuated throughout the video. The principal's office and biology class are also shown, while the students walk out of the building and look at the quad at the end of the video.
Performance chart
The single peaked at # 103 on the Billboard chart, keeping it out of reach of Billboard Hot 100, leading several Tonic brand wonders one hit (with "If You Could Only See" being the only band song for make Top 40). Nevertheless, the song is famous in the United States for its use in American Pie.
Although not a huge hit in the pop chart, "You Wanted More" peaked at # 3 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and # 10 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks. chart.
The highlight of the show was at # 6 in October 1999, because "You Wanted More" was the sixth most-played song on alternative radio, pop and rock stations across the United States.
Critical reception
All-Reviews.com commented on the contrast between the instrumentation and the lyrics: "Music has a hard rock guitar chord but the lyrics are a cool account of what love is", and argue that Tonic's desire to be everything for everyone is illustrated by the opening of the song ".
