1927 is an Australian pop rock band formed in 1987 with James Barton on drums, Bill Frost on bass guitar, his brother Garry Frost on guitar and keyboard, and Eric Weideman on vocals, guitars and keyboards. They were popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their big hit songs "When When I Think About You", "If I Can", "Compulsory Hero", and "Tell My Story". Their number-one multi-platinum album, ... ish (1988) was followed by The Other Side (1990) which reached number three. At the 1989 ARIA Music Awards, they won two categories: Breakthrough Artist - Album for ... ish and Breakthrough Artist - Single for "That's When I'm Thinking About You". At the 1990 ceremony, they won Best Videos for "Compulsory Heroes", directed by Geoff Barter. At the end of 1986 Garry Frost (ex-Moving Pictures) saw Weideman in the talent segment of "Red Faces" from various Hey Hey It's Saturday TV shows, Frost offered Weideman a place in a new band, 1927. In 1992 group it released a third studio album, 1927 , which reached the top 40; but they dispersed the following year. Weideman reformed 1927 in 2009 with a new formation.

History

Formation

1927 was formed in Melbourne in 1987 as a pop rock band. In 1984 guitarist and keyboardist Garry Frost had left Sydney-based rocker Moving Pictures after their second album, Matinà ©  © e . Frost wrote with 1981's Moving Pictures "What About Me?" - which was number one hit for Shannon Noll in 2004. In late 1986, Frost wrote songs in his home studio for an unformed band project. He watched Nine Network's Hey Hey It's Saturday series of "Red Faces" talent segments when Eric Weideman appeared and featured cover of The Police's hit song "Roxanne". Garry drove from Sydney to Melbourne, about 880 km (550 mi), to recruit Weideman on lead vocals, guitars, and keyboards. Prior to joining 1927 Weideman had played in various cover bands including, Mixed Feelings, before starting a short solo career. He then remembered, "I just started performing myself I was playing in a pub in Melbourne... Then a friend of mine dared me to go to 'Red Face'". The couple joins Garry's brother Bill Frost on bass guitar and James Barton on drums. The band's name, 1927, was taken from a suggestion and came from Garry's favorite word, "I have not done that since 1927".

After a year looking for a recording contract, 1927 was signed by Charles Fisher for his label, Trafalgar Productions. With Fisher producing a group recording their debut single, "That's When I Think You", which entered the ARIA Singles Chart in September 1988 and peaked at No. 1. 6. It was co-written by Garry Frost and Weideman. In 2011 former Hi-5 member, Nathan Foley, covered "That's When I Think You" on her live album, Acoustic Rhythms . In November 1988, the band released their second single, "If I Could", which reached position 4. 4. It was produced by Fisher with Jim Bonneford, and written by Garry Frost. In mid-November their debut album, ... ish , mostly produced by Fisher (except "If I Could"), followed. The rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, described it as "stirring, pop-majestic pop tunes". It peaked at No. 1 on the ARIA Album Ladder for four weeks and remain in the Top 50 for 46 weeks. It was awarded the 5ÃÆ'-platinum certification - for delivery of over 350,000 copies. In 2002, it was in the top 10 of the most successful debut album by Australian artists.

Two more top 20 singles from the album followed, "You're Never Know" (February 1989) and "Compulsory Hero" (April). In 1989, "It's Me Thinking You" was released internationally, peaking at the Top 50 on the UK Singles Chart, and just reaching the US Billboard Hot 100. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1989, 1927 won ' Breakthrough Artist - Single 'for' That's When I Think of You 'and' Breakthrough Artist - Album 'for ... ish . At the 1990 ceremony, they won the 'Best Video' for the "Compulsive Hero", directed by Geoff Barter. The band added Charlie Cole to the keyboard (ex-Moving Pictures) and toured Australia to support related albums and singles. At the end of 1989, they began working for their second album when Garry Frost announced he would leave the band at the beginning of the following year.

The Other Side

1927 founder Garry Frost was replaced by Dave Dwyer on guitar and keyboard. They recorded The Other Side with Weideman as the lead songwriter, and Fisher and Garry produced. After leaving in 1927, Garry Frost performed songwriting and production for other artists and worked on a solo album. The Other Side , which peaked at No. 1. 3 in July 1990, giving the Top 20 hit with "Tell Me a Story". McFarlane described the album as "full of well-made ambitious and pop arrangements, but lacked the charm and chorus" of... Ish. "Barton left in 1992 to be replaced on drums by Phillip Campbell, and in November they released their third eponymous album, <1928 produced by Mark Opitz. 1927 reached TopÃ,40 and the main single, "Scars", reached the Top 50 but the single second, "It Is not Love" (February 1993), was unsuccessful 1927 suffered financial and internal problems and disbanded in 1993. In September 1996 a compilation album, The Best of 1927 , was released , it included Weideman's solo debut, "Nothing I Can Do", which reached No. 73 in Australia in 1997. Furthermore, Weideman appeared as a solo artist.1927 was reformed on a regular basis including For Here and Now the '80s of the revival tour spiritually in the early 2000s, Weideman also continued his solo career its in the pub.

2009-present

In September 2009, the group, 1927, reissued ... ish as a digital remastered edition featuring live recording bonuses "Propaganda Machine" and "Compulsive Hero". The band, led by Weideman, was reformed with Damien Cooper on drums, Craig Laird on lead guitar and backing vocals, and Simon Shapiro on bass guitar and backing vocals. Since 1996 Shapiro has had a solo singer-songwriter career and, in 2007, won the Australasia Association's Right Trackwriter (APRA) Award at MusicOz and Songwriters Association Songwriters Association (ASA) Award from the Year Award. On June 17, 2009 the band appeared in Morning with Kerri-Anne and toured Australia during the second half of this year to early 2010. In March they supported Simple Minds and followed in June with the second leg of 20... ish Anniversary Tour. 1927 supports Roxette on their Charm School tour in Australia in early 2012. According to the 1927 Facebook page, their fourth album, Generation-i, will be released in April or May 2012. Pre-release copies of the album available in the Roxette show that was supported 1927 in February 2012. In June 1927 they started the Generation-i Tour on the east coast of Australia.

In June 2013, The Essential 1927 was released and reached number 96. Generation-i was officially released via Sony in August 2013. The limited edition DVD featuring showcase from Roxette tour is included with CD.
