Histori

The original launch of At Last! was published as a 12-inch LP consisting of ten songs, five songs on each side of the LP. Phil and Leonard Chess believe that James's voice has the potential of cross-crossover, so with this debut album, they support it with orchestral arrangements on many tracks. Finally! finally spawned four singles "All I Could Do Was Cry", "Believe Me," "At Last", and "My Dearest Darling". The album also includes standard pop and jazz covers, such as "Stormy Weather", "A Sunday Kind of Love", and "I Just Want to Make Love to You". On July 27, 1999, MCA/Chess was repeated digitally and reissued on an album on a compact disc, with four bonus duet songs performed with Harvey Fuqua: "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I can not have you."

Critical reception

Since its release, At Last! has been praised by many music critics. Stephen Cook of AllMusic gave the album five out of five stars, and, about James, writes, "someone hears a singer at the top in a swinging program and varies from blues, R & B, and jazz standards." Cook also praised the material recorded for the album, saying that At Last! has "strong material throughout." He also went on to say that James's voice, "expertly handling jazz standards like" Stormy Weather "and" A Sunday Kind of Love, "as well as the classic blues of Willie Dixon" I Just Want to Make Love to You. "James showed him a sharp facility on the title track in particular, because he easily moves from strong blues to shriek to more subtle and windy phrases; his inspired Ruth Brown, bad-girl growl just adds to the intensity."

Rolling Stone also goes on to exclaim that "James blossomed into a fiery translator at this stunning LP."
