Music and lyrics

Although it does not return "Can not Tell Me Nothing" has a slow, synth-driven, moody production feature, an example of a new sonic direction that will dominate much of the Graduation . West stated that he got inspiration from arena rock bands such as The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, explaining that the song's chords are similar to rock melodies. He also explained that, with the tracks, he wanted to make anthemic music and create theme songs for people. The song contains an ad-lib audio sample provided by Young Jeezy as well as background vocals provided by Connie Mitchell from the Australian electronics group Sneaky Sound System.

The lyrics, "Can not Tell Me Nothing" serve as a Western reflection on his fame and like hovering between insecure and confrontational while marked by bitter regret and self-defiance. West started the song by explaining his conflicting feelings about riches and desires, describing a necessity to spend it covering every and every other purpose in life. He attributes this to his overall inability to keep himself together even as he grows into an increasingly prominent figure in the public eye with lyrics like, "I feel the pressure, under further supervision/And what do I do? Music videos

Two separate music videos were accompanied "Can not Tell Me Nothing", with the first being televised and the second made online only. The first music video was directed by Hype Williams and released on West's official website on May 25, 2007. To visually complement the thematic and alien feel of the track, the video was filmed in the desert. It carries minimal aesthetics, with scenes taken in the vast and barren wasteland landscape. For a limited time, music videos are available as free downloads in the U.S. iTunes Store.

On July 25, 2007, West aired an alternative music video for "Can not Tell Me Nothing" on his website. This version was directed by Michael Blieden and featured comedian Zach Galifianakis and folk-songwriter Will Oldham. West was introduced to Galifianakis's work through his personal trainer, and finally asked him to appear in his second video after attending one of the Galifianakis stand-up events in Los Angeles. The low-budget and unmarked music video was filmed on the Galifianakis farm in North Carolina and featured him and Oldham narrowing their lips to the song. Alternate video was selected by Rolling Stone as the third best music video of 2007, while Pitchfork called this version the third best music video of the decade.
