Plot

Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer), is a 40-year-old divorced mother who works as a screenwriter and producer for the You Go Girl TV show. Rosie is not sure about her age, and uses cosmetics to keep up her looks. She has a very close relationship with her thirteen-year-old daughter, Izzie (Saoirse Ronan), who gets closer when she finds out that she has fallen in love with a boy in her class named Dylan (Rory Copus).

Despite her ex-husband's insistence that she starts dating again, she has no man in her life. To her dismay Rosie and David (David Mitchell), her English co-writer, her boss, Marty (Fred Willard) decided that the show might no longer include a controversial subject, so Rosie decided to create a new character for the show. He was taken by Adam (Paul Rudd), a bright and charming young man from one of his auditions, and decided to throw him as a new, nerdy character to fall for the character played by his arrogant and selfish main actress, Brianna (Stacey Dash). Adam's character was well received by the test audience, and Rosie persuaded Marty to give him a chance.

As he continues to offer Izzie's advice to Dylan, Rosie becomes smitten by Adam, who suggests they go to a club together. When he came to pick her up, Adam immediately bonded with Izzie, helping him complete the mission in the video game he played, to impress Dylan. While there, Rosie lied about her age and said that she was 36 years old, while Adam said she was 32 years old. Rosie is nervous about the age difference, but when she goes to the dance floor at the nightclub, she realizes that she is free like him, and joins her. The two kisses in Adam's car, where Rosie admits that she is actually 40 years old, will only be surprised when Adam reveals that she is actually 29 years old.

Adam assures him that he does not care about their age difference at all, and both continue their relationship. However, Rosie's insecurity about her age began to come out, raised by her internal conversation with Mother Nature (Tracey Ullman), and she confessed to Adam that she was not convinced that their relationship would work, to her bewilderment. Meanwhile, their relationship attracts the jealousy of Rosie's secretary, Jeannie (Sarah Alexander), who begins to sabotage them by stealing Adam's gift to Rosie, and then by stealing Adam's phone, taking Brianna's photo in a compromise position with it, and then stuffing it into Rosie's bag , which did not work. Rosie continues to be nervous when she hears the tape Adam tempts Brianna (she is encouraged to remain calm and center of her attention). Things got worse when Izzie had a double dating that failed with Dylan, and she began to feel insecure about herself, something that worried about Rosie.

When Adam first appeared on television, he was an instant hit, and he started to become famous from it. This caused Rosie to become increasingly insecure, and worried Adam would take advantage of his fame and start looking for younger women. The situation got worse when the show was unexpectedly canceled. Shortly afterwards, Adam was given a role in the upcoming sitcom, and he was surprised to find an oncoming ticket being sent to Adam who showed him in the car with Brianna. Already in an uncomfortable mood, Rosie had to berate Izzie when, during a chance to meet her friend, Henry Winkler, he revealed that Izzie and his friend had a joke called a number of celebrities in his phone book.

She faced Adam with a picture of herself with Brianna, and she was shocked, having never been in a car with her before. Rosie angrily broke up with her. Despite this, Adam made many attempts to make peace with him, including refusing to film a new sitcom that had been offered to take part until he was named a co-producer. Meanwhile, Rosie is looking through the reperto bloopers of her old show, when she realizes that it was filmed at the time that an oncoming ticket claimed Adam had been driving with Brianna, and concluded that the only person who could send her was Jeannie. He goes on to face Jeannie when Marty calls him into his office to offer him a job in Adam's sitcom, and strikes his face, making him cry. He then made peace with Adam. Then, at a school talent show, he sees Izzie finally winning Dylan, and watching it as two kisses. Mother Nature reminds her that, getting older, she makes way for a girl like Izzie to replace her.

Production

Heckerling's inspiration for I Can not Be Your Woman comes from her own private life as a single mother raising a girl during the making of a Clueless TV show. According to Missy Schwartz in the Entertainment Weekly article in the film, "Everyday, she feels increasingly ambivalent about working in an industry that promotes unrealistic beauty standards for young girls and considers women over 40 to be prehistoric, wild animals. "

Heckerling sent his script to Woman to Paramount Pictures, but the studio felt uncomfortable supporting the movie about the older female protagonist. The script eventually fell into the hands of independent producer Philippe Martinez from Bauer Martinez Entertainment, and the film was taken on a $ 25 million budget.

The subject of photography began in August 2005 and ended at the end of the year. Although many scenes were shot in California, others were shot in London, England to take advantage of tax incentives. To cut production costs further, Martinez advised Michelle Pfieffer to accept a pay cut ($ 1 million, plus 15% of gross).

Release

Bauer Martinez signed an agreement with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to distribute the film theatrically, and The Weinstein Company for the unauthorized distribution of DVDs and TVs. MGM backed down after learning about Pfieffer's share of movie revenue. After Bauer Martinez failed to find a theater distributor, it finally went straight to the video.
