" ' Heroes ' " is a song recorded by British musician David Bowie. It was co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno, produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, recorded in July and August 1977, and released on September 23, 1977. A product from the Bowie "Berlin" period, the song was not a big hit in the UK or United States after its release, but has since become one of Bowie's typical songs. In January 2016, after Bowie died, the song reached a new top 12 in the UK Singles Chart. " ' Heroes ' " has been named Bowie's second closest song after "Rebel Rebel".

Inspired by the scenes of Bowie producer/engineer Tony Visconti who embraced one of Bowie's supporting vocalists by the Berlin Wall, the song tells of two lovers, one from the East and one from West Berlin. Bowie's show on "Heroes" on June 6, 1987 at the German Reichstag in West Berlin was considered a catalyst for the fall of the Berlin Wall. Following Bowie's death in January 2016, the German government thanked Bowie for "helping to tear down the Wall", adding "You are now among the Heroes".

" ' Heroes ' " has received many awards since its release, as seen by inclusion in the 'best song of all time' ranking list compiled by music publications; Rolling Stone named the greatest 46th song ever, and NME named it the 15th largest. Bowie's scholar, David Buckley has written that "Heroes" "may be a definitive pop statement about the potential triumph of the human spirit over misfortune."

Inspiration and recording

The title of the song is a reference to the 1975 song "Hero" by the German krautrock band Neu !, which Bowie and Eno admire. It was one of the earliest songs recorded during the album sessions, but remained an instrument until near the end of production. The quotation marks in the title track, a deliberate deliberation, are designed to give an ironic quality to very romantic words, even triumphs, and music. Bowie said that "slow tempo and rhythm" was inspired by "I'm Waiting for the Man." Producer Tony Visconti took praise for inspiring a picture of a lover kissing "on the wall", as he and backing vocalist Antonia Maass (MaaÃÆ'Ÿ) hugged in front of Bowie as she looked out of the window at Hansa Studio. Bowie's habits in the period after the song's release to say that the protagonist was based on an anonymous young couple but Visconti, who married Mary Hopkin at the time, argued that Bowie protected her and her affair with Maass. Bowie confirmed this in 2003.

The music, co-written by Bowie and Eno, has been likened to the production of Wall of Sound, a wavy swinging guitar, percussion and synthesizer. Eno has said that his music always "sounds great and heroic" and that he has "that word - a hero - in my mind" even before Bowie wrote the lyrics. The basic track backing on the recording consists of a conventional piano arrangement, a bass guitar, a rhythm guitar, and a drum. But the remaining instruments are very different. It consists mostly of parts of the synthesizer by Eno using EMS VCS3 to produce a low frequency drone that is detang, with the pulse frequency of three oscillators that produce a juddering effect. In addition, King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp produced an unusual continuous sound by allowing his guitar to feed back and sit in different positions in the room to change the feedback pitch (feedback pitched). Tony Visconti mixes Dennis Davis's kick drum, which states that the track "looks walking" with it but has a more energetic feeling without it.

Bowie vocals were recorded with a "multi-latch" system designed by Visconti who creatively misuses gating. Three microphones were used to capture vocals, with a nine-inch microphone from Bowie, one 20 feet away and one 50 feet away. Each microphone is muted when the next microphone is triggered. When music was built, Bowie was forced to sing with increased volume to overcome the gating effect, leading to an even more fiery vocal performance as the song progressed. Jay Hodgson writes, "Bowie's performance grows in the right intensity as more atmosphere injects his shipment until, by the last verse, he has to shout just to be heard.... The more Bowie shouts just to be heard, in fact, the back further in a mixture of Visconti's multi-latch system pushed its vocal tracks, creating a harsh metaphor for the Bowie lovers situation. "

Release and after

" ' Heroes ' " was released in various languages and long ("the collector's wet dream" in the words NME editor Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray). In contrast to the confusing audio situation, the video (directed by Stanley Dorfman) is a straightforward and simple affair, the captured singer performing the song in what appears to be a single shoot with multiple cameras, swinging in front of a spotlight that creates a monotonous effect and approaches the silhouette.
