"I'm So Lonesome I Can Cry" is a song written and recorded by American country music singer-songwriter Hank Williams in 1949. Williams wrote a song that originally intended that words be spoken, rather than sung, as he did on multiple recordings Luke the Drifter. The song about loneliness was largely inspired by her troubled relationship with Audrey Sheppard's wife. With compelling lyrics, such as the opening sentence "Hear poor whiny-the will/He sounds too blue to fly," the song has been covered by various musicians. During the TV-special "Aloha from Hawaii" TV show, Elvis Presley introduced it by saying, "I want to sing a song that... maybe the saddest song I've ever heard."

According to Colin Escott's 2004 book Hank Williams: A Biography, Williams is inspired to write songs when he finds them in the upcoming MGM release schedule. [Note: maybe this should say, "inspired to record it"? How is it possible in the upcoming release schedule if it has not been written yet?] The song was recorded on August 30, 1949 at Herzog Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio. Williams is supported by members of the Pleasant Valley Boys - Zeke Turner (main guitar), Jerry Byrd (steel guitar), and Louis Innis (rhythm guitar) - as well as Tommy Jackson (fiddle) and Ernie Newton (bass). As Escott observed, the sadness of despair in Williams's voice on the recording was repeated by the support of musicians:

"Zeke Turner supports 'I'm Lonesome I Can Cry' with repeated numbers on electric guitar bass strings.Several weeks earlier, Turner led support on the Delmore Brothers recording of 'Blues Stay Away From Me' using a very lick similar... Jerry Byrd plays solos with unusual simplicity, paraphrasing melodies for a haunting effect, subtly adjusting tone and volume.Hank sings with unshakable confidence. "

Remarkably, the song was released as a B-side to the "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" blues because tempo numbers are considered more appropriate for jukebox trading than melancholy ballads. The single reached # 4 on the country charts in 1949. The song became very synonymous with Williams's legend and music legacy and has been widely praised. In the 2003 documentary The Road to Nashville , singer k.d. lang stated, "I think 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' is one of the most classic American songs ever written, really. In his autobiography, Bob Dylan recalled, "Even at a young age, I identified him, I did not have to experience anything Hank did to know what he was singing I never heard a robin cry but could imagine it and it made me sad. "In an online biography of the singer, Rolling Stone noted," In songs such as 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' Williams expressing intense personal emotion with the smoothness of the noble plain country, the then revolutionary approach has come to determine the genre through the works of the next artists from George Jones and Willie Nelson to Gram Parsons and Dwight Yoakam. "Rolling Stone ranked # 111 on the 500 Biggest Songs of All Time list, the oldest song in the list , and # 3 in 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time.
