Patrick Bruce Metheny ( m? - THEE -nee , born August 12 , 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer.
He is the leader of the Pat Metheny Group and is also involved in duets, solos, and other side projects. His style combines progressive and contemporary jazz elements, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion. Metheny has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards and is the only person who won a Grammy in ten different categories. She is the brother of jazz flugelhornist Mike Metheny.

Biography
Beginning of the year and education
Metheny was born in Lee's Summit, Missouri. His father, Dave, plays trumpets, his mother, Lois sings, and maternal grandfather Delmar is a professional trumpeter. Metheny's first instrument was a trumpet, taught by his brother Mike. His brother, father, and grandfather played a trio together at home. Her parents are fans of Glenn Miller and swing music. They took Metheny to a concert to listen to Clark Terry and Doc Severinsen, but they lacked respect for the guitar. Metheny's interest in guitars increased around 1964 when he saw The Beatles perform on TV. For his twelfth birthday, his parents allowed him to buy a guitar, the Gibson ES-140 3/4.
Metheny's life changed after hearing Miles Davis's 'Four and More' album. Soon after, he was captivated by Wes Montgomery's album Smokin 'on Half Note released in 1965. He quoted The Beatles, Miles Davis, and Wes Montgomery had the greatest influence on his music.
When he was fifteen, he won a scholarship from Down Beat magazine to a one-week jazz camp where he was mentored by guitarist Attila Zoller, who invited Metheny to New York City to see guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter.
While playing at a club in Kansas City, he was approached by Bill Lee, a dean at the University of Miami, and offered a scholarship. After less than a week on campus, Metheny noticed that playing the guitar all day during her teenage years had made her unprepared for the class. He admitted this to Lee, who offered him a job to teach instead, since the school recently introduced an electric guitar as a course of study.
He moved to Boston to teach at the Berklee College of Music with vibratory jazz Gary Burton and built a reputation as a child prodigy.
The debut album
In 1974 he appeared on an unofficial album titled Jaco with pianist Paul Bley, bassist Jaco Pastorius, and drummer Bruce Ditmas for Carol Carol's Carol's Lens Advertisement. But he did not realize that he was being recorded. Over the next year, he joined the band Gary Burton with guitarist Mick Goodrick.
Metheny released her debut album, Bright Size Life (ECM, 1976) with Jaco Pastorius on bass guitar and Bob Moses on drums. The next album, Watercolors (ECM, 1977), was the first time she recorded with pianist Lyle Mays, who became her most frequent collaborator. The album also featured Danny Gottlieb, who became the drummer for the first version of the Pat Metheny Group. With Metheny, Mays, and Gottlieb, the fourth member was bassist Mark Egan when the album Patrician (ECM, 1978) was released.

Pat Metheny Group
When Pat Metheny Group (ECM, 1978) was released, the Group was a quartet consisting of, in addition to Metheny, Danny Gottlieb on drums, Mark Egan on bass, and Lyle Mays on piano, autoharp and synthesizer. All but Egan has played on the Metheny album, Watercolors (ECM, 1977), recorded a year before the first Group album.
The second group album, American Garage (ECM, 1979), reached number 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart and across to the pop charts. From 1982 to 1985, Pat Metheny Group released Offramp (ECM, 1982), a live album, Travels (ECM, 1983), First Circle (EMI, 1984), and The Falcon and the Snowman (EMI, 1985), a soundtrack album for a movie of the same name in which they collaborated on the single "This Is Not America" â € Offramp marked the first appearance of bassist Steve Rodby (replacing Egan) and guest Brazilian artist Nana Vasconcelos on percussion vocals and without a word. In First Circle, Argentine singer and multi-instrumentalist Pedro Aznar joined the group as drummer Paul Wertico replacing Gottlieb. Both Rodby and Wertico were members of Simon and Bard Group at the time and had played at Simon-Bard in Chicago before joining Metheny. First Circle is Metheny's last album with ECM; he has become a key artist for the label but left the following disagreement with the founder of the label, Manfred Eicher. Still Life (Talking)
During this period, the Steppenwolf Theater Company of Chicago featured compositions by Metheny and Mays for their Lyle Kessler drama productions Orphans , in which this music has remained a music of choice for all drama productions worldwide ever since.
Metheny then re-investigated solo and band projects, and four years passed before the release of the next Group record, a live album titled The Road to You (Geffen, 1993), featuring songs from two albums Geffen's studio among new songs. The group integrates new instrumentation and technology into its work, primarily the use of synthesizers by Mays.
Metheny and Mays themselves refer to the following three Pat Metra Group releases as triptych: We Live Here (Geffen, 1995), Quartet (Geffen, 1996), and Imaginary Day (Warner Bros, 1997). Moved from a Latin style that has dominated releases from the previous ten years, the album includes experiments with sequential synthetic drums on a single track, free form improvements on acoustic instruments, and signature symphonic schemes, blues, and sonatas.
With Speaking About Now (Warner Bros, 2002), new Group members added: drummer Antonio SÃÆ'¡nchez from Mexico City, Vietnam's Cuong Vu trumpet player, and bassist, vocalist, guitarist and percussionist Richard Bona from Cameroon.
The Way Up (Nonesuch, 2005) consists of one part along 68 minutes (divided into four sections for CD navigation) based on a pair of three-note kernels: opening B, A #, F # and B derived , A, F #. At The Way Up , the harmonica player GrÃÆ' Â © goire March of Switzerland was introduced as a member of the new group, while Bona contributed as a guest musician.
Side project
Outside of the Group, Metheny has shown a different side of her musical personality. He made the album Orchestra (Nonesuch, 2010) with a complicated special mechanical instrument, allowing one person to write and perform as a one-person orchestra. Instead, his album Secret Story (Geffen, 1992) used orchestral arrangements to be found more frequently on the movie soundtrack, such as his own The Falcon and the Snowman (EMI, 1985) and > World Map (Warner Bros, 1999). Guitar acoustic solo albums include New Chautauqua (ECM, 1979), One Quiet Night (Warner Bros, 2003), and What's All About ( Nonesuch, 2011). He explored the avant-garde fringes at Zero Tolerance for Silence (Geffen, 1994). It's also a solo guitar album, but an electric guitar, and for many fans and critics it's just sound. Metheny has ventured into the avant-garde before at 80/81 (ECM, 1980), Song X (Geffen, 1986) with Ornette Coleman, and The Sign of Four with Derek Bailey (Knitting Factory Works, 1997).
In 1997, Metheny was recorded with bassist Marc Johnson on the release of Johnson Sound Of Summer Running (Verve, 1998). The following year, he recorded a guitar duo with Jim Hall (Telarc, 1999), whose work greatly influenced Metheny. He collaborated with Polish folk singer Anna Maria Jopek on Upojenie (Warner Poland, 2002) and Bruce Hornsby at Hot House (RCA, 2005).
She was recorded on the album by her older brother, Mike Metheny, a jazz trumpet player, among them Day In Night Out (1986) and Close Enough for Love (2001) ).

Unity Band

Influences
As a young guitarist, Metheny is trying to sound like Wes Montgomery, but when he was 14 or 15, he decides to be ill-mannered to imitate. In the liner record of the Montgomery 2-Disc compilation of The Verve Jazz Sides, Metheny was quoted as saying, "Smokin 'at Half Note is the absolute jazz of the ever-created guitar album It's also a record that teaches me how to play. "
Ornette Coleman's 1968 album New York Is Now! inspired Metheny to find its own direction. He has recorded the composition of Coleman on a number of albums, starting with the medley "Round Trip" and "Broadway Blues" on his debut album, Bright Size Life (1976). He worked extensively with Coleman collaborators, such as Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, and Billy Higgins, and he recorded the album Song X (1986) with Coleman and toured with him.
Metheny made three albums about ECM with Brazilian vocalist and percussionist NanÃÆ'¡ Vasconcelos. He lived in Brazil from the late 1980s to the early 1990s and performed with several local musicians, such as Milton Nascimento and Toninho Horta. He played with AntÃÆ'Â'nio Carlos Jobim as a tribute, in live performances at Carnegie Hall Salutes The Jazz Masters: Verve 50th Anniversary.
He is also a fan of several pop music artists, especially singers/songwriters including James Taylor (after whom he named the song "James" on Offramp ); Bruce Hornsby, Cheap Trick, and Joni Mitchell, with whom he performed on his live tour of Shadows and Light (Asylum/Elektra, 1980). Metheny also loves Buckethead music. He also works with, sponsoring or helping to make recordings of singers/songwriters from around the world, such as Pedro Aznar (Argentina), Akiko Yano (Japan), David Bowie (England), Silje Nergaard (Norway), Noa (Israel)), and Anna Maria Jopek (Poland).
Two Metheny albums, The Way Up (2005) and Orchestrion (2010), show the influence of the American minimalist composer Steve Reich and use similar rhythm numbers arranged around the pulse. Metheny recorded the composition of Reich "Electric Counterpoint" on Reich's album Different Trains (Nonesuch, 1987).

Pikasso
Metheny plays a 42-string Pikasso made especially by Canadian Linut Manzer's luthier on "Into the Dream" and on the Quartet album (1996), Imaginary Day (1997), < i> Jim Hall & amp; Pat Metheny (1999), Trio -> Live (Warner Bros, 2000), and Speaking of Live Now and Imaginary Live Day DVD. Metheny has used the guitar in his guest appearance on other artist albums. He used Pikasso at Metheny/Mehldau Quartet (Nonesuch, 2007), his collaboration with pianist Brad Mehldau and the trio of sidemen Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard; Pikasso is featured in the Metheny composition of "The Sound of Water". Manzer has made many acoustic guitars for Metheny, including mini guitars, acoustic sitar guitars, and baritone guitars, which Metheny uses to record One Quiet Night (2003).
Guitar synthesizer
Metheny was one of the first jazz guitarists to use the Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer. He commented, "You have to stop thinking about it as a guitar, because it's no longer a guitar". He approached him as if he were a horn player, and he preferred the "high trumpet" sound of the instrument. One of the most frequently used "patches" is on Roland's JV-80's "Vintage Synth" expansion card, titled "Pat's GR-300". In addition to Roland, it uses the Synclavier controller.
Six-string and twelve electric strings
Metheny is an early supporter of twelve guitars in jazz. During his tour in 1975 with Gary Burton's "Quartet" (five people, including Metheny), he mainly played twelve-stringed electric guitars against the work of six-stringed guitarist Mick Goodrick.
Before Metheny, Pat Martino had used twelve-string electric guitars in studio albums, Desperado, and John McLaughlin had used a double-neck electric guitar with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Ralph Towner was probably the first to use twelve string acoustic guitars in jazz ("The Moors", from Weather Report I Sing the Body Electric, Columbia, 1972), and Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine made extensive use of acoustics twelve strings in an alternate barrel at the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival, then released some material on their 1976 Twin House album.
Metheny used twelve-string guitars on his debut album, Bright Size Life (1976), including an alternate setting on "Sirabhorn", and on the next album ("San Lorenzo", from Pat Metheny Group and Travel ).
The semi-acoustic guitar
At the age of 12, Metheny purchased the Gibson ES-175 natural end result she played during her early career, retired in 1995. After her first tour in Japan in 1978, she started an association with Ibanez guitars, which have since produced various models PM signature.
