Kid Pix is a bitmap image program intended for children. Originally created by Craig Hickman, it was first released for the Macintosh in 1989 and later published in 1991 by BrÃÆ'¸derbund. Hickman was inspired to make Kid Pix after watching his son Ben struggling with MacPaint, and thus the main idea behind his development was to create a drawing program that would be very easy to use. The current product retains many of the same principles as the original software created by Hickman in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The latest Mac and Windows versions of this product are developed by current owner and publisher Kid Pix, MacKiev Software, which has been involved in the development of Mac Kid Pix Deluxe 3 and has been the sole developer of the Kid Pix series since the premiere of Kid Pix Deluxe 3X before acquiring brand from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in October 2011. Hickman was not involved with the development of Kid Pix from 1998 until the end of 2011 when he started consulting with MacKiev Software about the upcoming edition development. Kid Pix and all intellectual property, trademark and copyright associated with it are owned by MacKiev Software. In 2018, Kid Pix Deluxe 4D (KPD4D) was announced by the publisher, but no official word on its progress or release date has been confirmed.

The canvas occupies most of the available screens, and the entire canvas is visible at all times. The image tool available to the user is placed in the key column at the left end of the screen. Instead of using the menus to access the various options that each tool has, they are displayed in a row of icons along the bottom of the screen. Selecting a new tool presents a series of new options, like different styles for Wacky Brush . The color palette is located below the tool list and consists of a collection of colored boxes for each available color. Files with the KPX extension can be converted to a more accessible PCX format by renaming the extension.
Basic Drawing Tools
Here are the drawing tools used in Kid Pix:
- Pencil Tool , a tool that draws a free line to the image. Six lines of thickness are provided.
- Row Tool , used to create perfectly straight lines. Like the Pencil Tool, six thick lines are provided.
- Paint Bucket , used to fill areas with color or solid pattern.
- Square Tool , is used to create a perfect square or rectangle. By changing the line thickness in the line tool you can change the square thickness.
- Circle Tool , similar to Square Tool. This is used to create a perfect circle, and its thickness can be changed using a line tool.
Custom Image Tool
Kid Pix includes a selection of tools that go beyond drawing lines and simple shapes. These include:
- Wacky Brush , contains options for painting various effects onto an image, such as a drip paint line, shapes line, or a random leafless tree.
- Mixer , provides various options for affecting the entire image with distorted, blurry, and fading effects. Starting from Kid Pix Deluxe 3, examples of the effect will be shown on the butterfly.
- Rubber Stamp , a collection of small icons that can be added to an image in a manner similar to the use of clip art. Original stamps taken from Apple Computer Cairo font. Tools Selection and Removal

Undo Guy
Undo Guy acts as a standard undo button, undoing the last changes made to the image. Wacky TV

Kid Pix Studio offers a complementary program for the original Kid Pix. It opens the ability for children to create not only static images but also animated creations.

Extended to allow the use of Kid Pix, Moopie, Stampimator and Digital Puppet files in a slide show.
Moopies
Very similar to the standard Kid Pix program except with reduced size canvas and the ability to add some animated rubber stamps and weird brush items. Music and sound can also be selected to play in the background "moopie."
Stampimator
Again similar to the standard Kid Pix and Moopies programs, except the animated rubber stamp can be dragged across the canvas recording the path they will follow repeatedly.
Digital Puppets
Some ready-made computer dolls are provided in this program. Users can animate them like real dolls including selecting facial expressions by pressing various buttons on the keyboard. Sound and music, and backgrounds can be added to follow the puppet movement.
Standalones
The "Moopies," "Digital Puppets," "Stampimators" and "Slideshows" creations can be saved as standalone executables that allow them to be viewed by others without having their copy of Kid Pix Studio. "Slideshows" also have additional possibilities for export to video files, although this functionality is limited to slide shows containing only Kid Pix images.
Wacky TV
This feature allows users to watch movies and animations created in Moopies, and Slideshows, and even any movies that may be owned by users on their computers. Several buttons are available for use in this feature, allowing users to watch movies in several different ways, such as in reverse or reversing screens. This is also available on older versions of Kid Pix.
Kid Pix Studio Deluxe
The newer version, titled Kid Pix Studio Deluxe, displays an updated selector screen and enables the editing text item once placed, which was not possible in earlier versions of Kid Pix. It's also possible in this version that the computer reads text aloud, and, exclusively for the Macintosh version, adds some music to play in the background during SlideShow.
Kid Pix Deluxe 3
Kid Pix received significant changes with Kid Pix Deluxe 3. It is updated with a new 3D display interface and new sound effects that make it almost unrecognizable from older versions. The only surviving new feature inherited from Kid Pix Studio is SlideShow. This may be because others are not required with the addition of clip art and animated images to the basic Kid Pix program.

Kid Pix Deluxe 4
Kid Pix Deluxe 4 sees some improvements to the Kid Pix Deluxe 3, including an updated interface that lies more faithfully to the original Kid Pix (thus causing the canvas to become larger), the Text tool that has the WYSIWYG font menu, the Idea Machine creature accessible from user interface, not just from the program menu, a slimmer and more organized Background library, bilingual Undo that can insert English and Spanish phrases, and video tutorials on how to use the program and each individual tool. For Macintosh users, this is the first version of Kid Pix compatible with Mac OS X, the latest version compatible with Mac OS "Classic" (in this case, Mac OS 8 and 9), and the only version to use the Apple Carbon API.
Kid Pix Deluxe 3X
New version of Kid Pix Deluxe 3, this version features Mac OS X compatibility, canvas size upgrades and integration with apps from Apple's iLife app suite, such as iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto, and GarageBand. Also, export Kid Pix project features to iPod video format, giving children early in creating their own podcasts. Furthermore, the exploding eraser of the Kid Pix Deluxe 3X edition was replaced with a fire hose, which was less damaging and noisy.
Kid Pix Deluxe 3D
Significant increase of Kid Pix Deluxe 3X, 3D edition published for Mac by MacKiev Software in October 2010 and for Windows in October 2011. While retaining features from previous "3X" editions, Kid Pix Deluxe 3D emphasizes digital storytelling with video and export narration to YouTube. The "3D" section of this name comes from newly added 3D animations and backgrounds, and an export feature to 3D that creates anaglyph video images that can be viewed using red/blue 3D glasses (included in the package).
