"Safe & Sound" was written by Taylor Swift, Joy Williams, John Paul White, and T-Bone Burnett. In the fall of 2011, Burnett and the production team, as well as Swift and The Civil Wars, came to Burnett's home in Los Angeles to write the lyrics. After two hours, the song finished. Swift went on to describe, "The Civil War held a show that night in LA, so they rushed to T Bone's house. There are so many things he can do in production to make the song bigger sonic than that, but I think it might be a mistake. "To him to leave the song as a lullaby is brilliant."
On December 22, 2011, Swift posted some song lyrics through his Twitter account and said that "Something I'm very [excited] for a very long time is about to happen." Four days later, the song was digitally released on the iTunes Store.
